Is my goal marathon pace supposed to be faster than this? Or slower? I was a little bummed out, I was shooting for around 8:30, but I just kept reminding myself that I'm running more than I ever have before, and am certainly not fresh as a daisy before each run anymore. Speaking of, thank you Leap Day for allowing me to surpass my longest month ever. :D 400 feet of climbing, headwinds for only 3 miles, yay!

awesome miles, Ellen! It's tough when the milage starts to pile up - that's how I'm feeling these days too. Still got it done though!

Great 14. Your mp should be much faster than this - but there is no need for you to be doing mp pace for 14 mile runs. That's a solid training pace for the distance

Nothing about that run to be bummed about. That is a good pace for 14 miles with 400 feet of climbing and a headwind. Nice Job Ellen.

Ellen - I usually run my MLRs between 8 and 8:30 pace and my marathon pace is 7:15 - 7:30. MLRs aren't usually supposed to be at MP, so I wouldn't stress about it. Just gobble up the miles and let your body get more fit! And yay for the beautiful day.

That's a good pace for such a run. If this pace was comfortable, then you should be able to run faster in the marathon.

Sweet! Thanks guys! I just am running a little blind here, I really don't know what my marathon pace even should be... AJ your long runs are then even slower than the ML runs, right?

@Ellen - I try to do a few longs with MP miles mixed in. So like 17 miles with 5 or 8 at a quicker pace. But in general my long run pace is between 8 and 9 min miles. There is lots of evidence that suggest running slow on long runs is good for you. So try to have a mix of both with a few more on the slow side. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking you train at marathon pace on ever long run, most marathoners only do that a few times a cycle.

@Ellen - the best way to determine your MP is to run a half. Do you have any half marathons planned, or could you? A solid race effort half can help you with a pacing strategy (e.g. predicted time) for 5k,10k, and marathon distances. I think I remember you saying your 10K PR was about 46 minutes? That would predict an 8:15 MP (if you are properly trained, mostly meaning endurance and mile base). But a recent half would be a better predictor.

Yeah... that would be the best thing to do, huh. I'm not signed up for anything because of the money, and because I was worried about my foot injury. Oh well, it'll just be fun to run it and we'll see what happens haha

I don't know Ellen... I was much like you now back in the summer of 2009... I ran Imogene, and started boosting miles as well... but I had NO good predictors before I hit my P.R. in the marathon at 3:18:30... I think what did it was simply doing what you are doing -- boosting my mileage base.... (my previous P.R. was a 3:53 BTW)

daaaaaang, that's HUGE!! It's tough too since the CO marathon is downhill, I'd like to think I could meet a big goal with that course. I also think NOT having a goal is a good way to make sure I don't go out too fast and just run comfortably. 3:18... that's so awesome!

I DO think you can hope to PR -- its a great course for that...At any rate, there are SO many of us DMers going to be there, you won't have a lack of support or encouragement!

I thought I'd get a PR on that CO marathon course since it was all downhill...not so much. Almost my worst marathon ever since I went out way too fast. They will tell you over and over at the begining. "do not run the downhills any faster than you would the flats". I didn't listen and by mile 13 the quads hurt and every step was painful. So do listen to them. Much harder said than done when you're feeling great flying down a hill! You may not have as much problems since you are used to hills tho.

Definitely thought of that too Karla! The downhill wasn't a problem for me last year doing the half, but I was running WAY more hills than I have been doing now with the snow on the trails. Guess it's time to start practicing some downhill running :)

Ellen - I agree with Karla not to make too much of downhills, but for a different reason. When I ran Vegas RnR, I got caught up in the fact that I was running at a lower altitude and thought that would help me. I ran too fast and crashed. At the marathon distance, the most likely factor to determine your success is the your body's ability to store and use glycogen. Run out and your cooked. Neither running downhill or at lower altitude does much to change your body's efficiency of burning glycogen.

nice 14 miler Ellen, dont focus so much on the pace, just fun with how ya feel, and you'll get there, took me a long time to realize that, but eventually you just gotta listen to your body and let it catch up with your mind!
