A perfect race morning in downtown Prattville today. Met up with around 10 of the kids I coach at the Y (ages 12-16) and challenged them to stay with me at about an 8-min pace. While they all did really well, only Matt stayed on my hip the entire time. Our first mile at 8:30/mi was hindered by the crowd, which was perfect. The second mile he tired a little and slowed to an 8:52/mi pace. In his defense there was a long slow climb during this stretch. Finally, he dug deep and finished mile 3 in 8:14 and found enough gas to manage a sprint to the finish against another swimmer, Tristan, who started out faster and faded just enough for us to catch. I was really proud of Matt's determination, effort and finishing time right around 26 minutes. And I take nothing away from Tristan's performance, either. You know someone gave it their all when they cross the line and then immediately start throwing up off to the side.

Aside from the race itself it was great to see so many friendly faces. I got to talk with Keith K. for a bit, and briefly met Jessica A. for the first time. Really though, there are just too many people to list.

After the race I did a couple of cool down miles with Mary and Coach Martie, and then after the awards ceremony had to run a couple of more miles solo just because it was so nice out.

Congratulations to Thea Langley for putting on yet another outstanding race. I understand there were about 400 finishers, which is unbelievable for an event in just its fourth year.

Drew, it is good to see such a positive role model for those kids. I was wondering the other day what got younger folks interested in the sport of running. Now, I have a better idea.

Glad I missed that puking part! I was wondering how come I didn't see you ahead of me the whole time. So nice of you to run with the kiddos! I'm sure they really enjoyed it.
