good Norfolk Freedom Marathon 26.2 mi 03:28 07:55 pace

I'm really happy I was able to run this race. All week I've had sinus issues that turned into a cold and flu-like symptoms yesterday. After little to no sleep last night, I wanted to just stay home, but I was the first leg in a marathon relay team that some friends of mine put together. I wasn't originally on the team, but one person had to drop out so I became Bridgette for the first 6.7 miles.

My goal was to run by feel. I was allowing myself to quit at the first relay point if I felt awful, or continue and stop after the first loop. The weather was nice and cool, and I was feeling fine after the first loop, so I decided to keep going.

I was maintaining about a 7:35 pace which is equal to my PR, and I decided to hold it as long as possible. At about 18, it was warming up and I was slowing down. I was feeling feverish and really congested so I slowed it down just to make it to the finish. It was fun running through the half marathoners because it made me feel really fast.

I did have to take some walk breaks the last couple of miles where the course left the half marathoners. It was really lonely out there with no one around. The coolest part was crossing Tidewater Drive which is a main road, because five officers stopped traffic and a motorcycle cop with lights and horn blaring escorted me across the road. I felt like I was leading the race. I wonder if all the people in the cars thought I was leading as well.

Rather uneventful finish, I was just glad it was over. Immediately started drinking water and ran into Bill M. and Trish so we talked a bit while walking around. Then caught up with Marie and Bill, Les G. and Charlyne Ann G. , Lori H. , Jon Flex L. , and some other people while I laid on the grass and soaked up some rays. I had a couple of pieces of pizza, then had to leave for Darby's soccer game.

I am pleased with the result considering how bad I've been feeling. I really liked this race and plan on doing it again. The double loop didn't bother me, and I liked knowing where I'm at during the second loop so I know what to expect. Three weeks to rest up and hopefully shake this cold before the Memphis Marathon. It is a much hillier course, so I hope the legs come back strong from todays race.

Great time! Nice work out there. It did get warm today. Considering how shitty you felt, you did great. I think after one lap I would've shut it down.
