This was the first time I have gone above ~2500m continuously. The session aim was to swim slow and steady, try to keep count, focus on technique, and just get the distance done - especially as we are doing 5k on April 18th for the Swimathon.
I felt ok but very tight in my calves. This wound up with a foot/calf cramp at lap 71 of 76 (50m pool) and another swimmer grabbing my arm, pulling me to the wall, and working out the cramp. I sincerely thank the lovely Iris for her help, as the lifeguards were chatting and did not see my arm go up and me hanging on the divider waiting for a pull onto the wall. The cramp lasted 3 minutes and after that I just took the final 5 super easy.
Other key learnings from today:
- I must get new goggles. I felt like I was swimming with my eyes in water the whole time. I need to find a place to get fit properly especially before the 5k.
- I need to work on shoulder strength. All of my joints are loose, and I could feel movement in my right should related to a bike accident years ago with this longer swim. Something to ask the coach for...
- I'm not picking up my left elbow enough. And I am not bilateral breathing as much as I was before fitness swim sessions. I am going to sign up for another 8 week technique class to fine tune some more.
- I now know I can do distance. It was actually not too tough. A huge confidence builder!
- Future swim sessions at the Lido will be done by 10am... Today we arrived at 10.30 and it was CROWDED. Also the earlier I start the easier it will be to add on running after, which we really wanted to do.
- Avoid milkshakes as recovery food. I thought that having one at Hawksmoor, my favourite local restaurant, would react with me better than the last one I had in Victor Idaho in the summer. Nope. Bad stomach reaction - it was delicious but I think that much milk and I just don't get along...
- Who knew that I needed sunscreen in March? I have pink cheeks from the sun - gosh I love the outdoor pool!

Try out some Zoggs Predators. They are huge, but leak-proof.

Thanks guys. This was such a fun day. I think I am meant to be in the water. Saw a guy wearing a Swim Trek cap from the Egypt tour and thought - wow, I can do one of those now, no problem! :-)

Thanks guys. It was a long distance but surprisingly easy, I was in the cruising zone. Lots to learn from when you go the distance!
