I had to think about how I was going to get in 20 miles today, with coaching soccer, and wanting to be a lazy ass and watch the Spartans and Tigers later. I woke up at 6am, had a Clif Builder Bar (Mint Chocolate Chip flavored) and 12 oz of water. Sat around til about 7. Wife and daughter still sound asleep. I step outside and it is not too cold. But I did have my new arm sleeves on + my Martian tech shirt from this years race. I decided to do an 8 mile loop from east to west, and then 12 miles south and back north.
First 8 miles were uneventful. Just trying to get a steady rhythm. I was all over the place. 9:10 - 9:40 every other half mile splits. I wanted again to be around 9:20-9:30 per mile and stay consistent. After about 3 miles, I started to get in a groove, and settled in. Popped my first round of GU chomps at 3.5. As the sun was coming up, I was headed back east. So nice to see the sun come up while running. Definitely gave me an extra kick in my step. Around mile 7, I really had to use the bathroom. So I ran behind a tree on Campbell and 14 mile, and took care of business. Lucky to be a guy, as this only took about 30 seconds to pee and go. I apologize to my mom for not washing my hands.
I stashed an extra water bottle behind some bushes at mile 8, and it certainly came in handy, as I refilled my handheld. Popped 2 more GU chomps at 8 miles. Now headed south towards Ferndale.
Miles 8-12 were solid. Felt pretty good during this stretch. My buddy Steve saw me running and texted me. Headed through my old neighborhood in Ferndale, and hit up Livernois heading north. Back across a side street, headed South on Woodward, until I hit 9 mile. Scary moment as I tweaked my ankle a bit crossing the street. Luckily, maintained my balance and it was a non issue. Trudged up through Downtown Royal Oak for miles 13-18.
GU Chomps at 12.5, 15, and 17.5.
Once I hit 18, I realized this was the furthest I have ever run, and got an extra kick in my step. Coincidentally, one of my favorite tunes popped on, and I felt pretty good.
Miles 19 and 20 were a non issue, and finished strong. Wife had a plate of eggs and bacon ready for me when I got home. She is the best.
First 10: 9:09, 9:32, 9:33, 9:24, 9:10, 9:22, 9:18, 9:27, 9:25, 9:26
2nd 10: 9:22, 9:27, 9:28, 9:32, 9:14, 9:21, 9:28, 9:27, 9:35, 9:30
Now, off to coach some soccer, watch MSU / OSU and Tigers / Twins. Oh yeah, I may eat a cow later.
3 weeks till the Freep. Some nice tapers coming up. Will enjoy for sure. Again, no expectations... just gonna get out there and do my best!!
