This race was hands down the best thing I've done since the triathlons. My friend Annie and I did the relay with her starting out, but since she's a seasoned half-marathoner, she ran the whole course. We ended up running 1 mile, walking 1 mile, running 2 miles, walking 1, and running 1. It was a great intro to the 10K, and the atmosphere was fabulous!
The best part of the race, hands down, was the last .2 miles. I had heard marching band music in the last few miles of the course and kept getting all excited (nerd alert!). Imagine my surprise and elation when I entered Fair Park and heard the opening notes to Taps (the UT Fight Song). I should mention that I've been a band geek my whole life, but I was in the UT marching band for 4 years during undergrad. Their timing was perfect - they started playing just as I came around the corner and I saw a group of LHB kids standing on the steps in full uniform. I seriously almost started crying - my running buddy was so amused by how amped up I got.
Overall, the race was perfect, the weather was insanely beautiful, and my new goal is next year to do the full Dallas RNR 1/2 Marathon. Next up: more 5ks and running a whole 10k without stopping.
