Was not my day to run a good race :-( I woke up feeling OK, got to Soldier Field and thought I could easily run 1:22. Lined up with the 8:00/mile with friends in Corral A. All of a sudden, I had a weird change of heart. I wanted to crawl back into bed. Like badly. My energy was drained just standing there. Oddest feeling.
Splits:
1 - 8:49 (crowded, warming up, hit lap on Garmin late. I hate going through the tunnel at McCormick)
2 - 8:13 (feeling ok actually)
3 - 8:22 (still ok)
4 - 8:25 (water)
5 - 8:17 (turn-around and split was 42:09 - on pace to finish <1:25)
6 - 8:24 (water? felt ok)
7 - 10:07 (ARGHHHHH! Pit stop at the bathroom!)
8 - 8:25 (back to my groove)
9 - 8:41 (water at @DP_turtle's ACS station!)
10 - 8:21 (blah. I'm done)
Finished in 1:26:08. Personal record by 50 seconds. But why am I upset? Was it because Jordan A (@jor_dash) beat my time? Was it because I had higher expectations? I think I'm mostly upset because though my training has been pretty good, my head wasn't in it today. I let the mental part get to me even though I was running on all cylinders (oh, bad pun!)
The BEST part was meeting with friends after the race!! In addition to my real life buddies, I got to meet/see Francesco, Ed, Tony, Jordan, Joe, Sue, Heather, Kate, Molly, Liz, Shannon, Andie, Sean, @pigtailsflying, Nick (before the race), Jeff (@chicagophotosho), Ken... I hope I didn't miss anyone. Great brunch and weather after the race (hot).
Additional notes: took 1 GU roctane orange vanilla at mile 5
The race was canceled after 2 hours (I think) due to conditions increasing to level Extreme (wowzers).

*whistles* wow, crazy that conditions got that bad. But that's Chicago for ya, right?
I saw someone post about this race yesterday on Twitter—how cool that you got to finish inside Soldier Field. I grew up in Chicago, so being able to finish where Walter Payton played would be such a cool experience.
Congrats on the PR, and congrats on getting a PR when your heart was nowhere to be found. Next time out, when your heart teams up with your meat, you're gonna crush it!

Sorry you are disappointed with your time but remember you had a bathroom break too, they always take longer than you think adding minutes, then its hard to get back into a groove. I think you did a good job toughing it out on a mentally rough day.

Sorry to hear you weren't at your best. You still rocked it though.

You should still feel good about the PR, that is still an excellent time. I think you are just bummed about Jordan. He is a great guy, but maybe we'll have to trip him next time..... (Just kidding Jordan!) Strange that you got so drained at the start, did you eat ok this morning?

A distance PR in those hard conditions; take it and run with it, my friend. See ya in San Francisco.

A PR is a PR, and any race with PR result is a good race. The beauty of it is you PR'd with room for further improvement... Increasing your chances for another PR on the next 10 miler, right? Celebratory beer now, celebratory beer later!

Thanks everyone. This was my 3rd year running this race. Finishing on the 50-yard line in Soldier Field is cool (before they quickly rush you off the field!). I felt well-hydrated, stomach was ok with my breakfast, my headaches were too bad. The heat didn't affect me too badly even though I was COVERED in salt later. "Chanthana, you have white stuff under your eyes" says Liz. Luckily, no races for me until July. Just going to focus on my training for Chicago!

Great job!! Just think how fast you'll run your next race if you're having a good day, or even just an average day!

very cool that you finished on Soldier Field! I just ran the Green Bay Half Marathon a couple weeks ago and we did a lap around the inside of Lambeau Field at the very end, which was AWESOME, but they DEFINITELY didn't let us on the turf ;)

I'm so sorry Chanthana. Whenever I have disappointments I try and remember that while we put so much pressure on the actual race day..It is the day-in and day-out training that makes us better athletes! Don't let this race define you. and you STILL PR'ED! Looking forward to following all of your greatness to come!!

First, I think your pace was really great (until the pit stop)...so don't get freaked. You're in the top 25% overall, so you did great. I can totally relate to your head just not being there. Secondly: it was SO great to finally meet you! We will all get together again, but for now we're all no longer solely virtual!
Let's all kick ass this summer!

Great job Chanthana! I really miss running the Soldier Field 10...I ran it 3 years in a row before I moved here to Oahu. I too disliked the McCormick tunnel, but really loved the finish inside the Stadium being able to see yourself on the big screen:) Anyway, it doesnt sound like you have anything to be upset about, because you had a great time, especially with the heat. And yet another race stopped due to extreme heat in Chicago(sounds familiar). Anyway, Nice job!
