Tonight's speed workout was a 4 miles tempo run around the middle of Central Park. This is by far my least favorite of the workouts, because it is one I can easily do on my own. However, that said, I typically treat this as a race, and run it as fast as possible, which I would not do in a normal training run.
Both of my shins were tight, and I never fully recovered from that. It was not bad enough that I ever came close to stopping, but it was an annoyance. I think this particular course (clockwise 4 miles from 90th St) aggravates my shin due to the long downhill (cat hill) in mile 1, and the always fast mile 1.
Overall, I struggled a little bit. My time was 33:45, which I know is quite respectable, but I'm still a bit disappointed because it is only my 4th fastest out of the 12 times I've done this workout over the years. And, of the 4, one of them was in 4 inches of snow, and 2 were within 10 seconds of my time today, so, in actuality, it was one of my worse efforts, timewise. Just hits home how even though I've been running great lately, I really do still have far to go to take my running to the next level.
The best part of this run was passing people in the last 2 miles, typically on the uphills. I'm a strong uphill runner, and that is when I make my move on poor unsuspecting people that are losing it on the uphills! I was able to blow by 2 people in the last .4 miles, and finished far ahead of both of them, so I was very pleased with the strong finish, and able to finish on a very strong note!

You probably ran right past my at some point on cat hill ;) There were TONS of groups out in the park tonight. Nice finish to a strong run!

I think its neat that you treat this run as a race. 33.45 at 8.26 pace is very respectable. You'll get where you need to be, soon enough. Love how you blew past those folks. HAA!!!

Nice Job. A very respectable pace. I do the same thing on uphills. It's the downhills I need work on. It must be nice to run where other people are running. I am always out alone where I live.

Are you training with Urban? I was one of the groups out there tonight. Hope we weren't too annoying!

Nice job, Scott! It must be fun to pass people who are struggling up those hills. :)

It's a VERY respectable time, Scott! I could NEVER run that fast. We are our own worse critics, aren't we? :)

Yes Gina, we definitely are. I guess it is not the time so much that was the problem, but that it was slow relative to the other times I've done the same workout.
