All I wanted was to have a good race, test my running fitness, and if possible break 1:30:00. I drove the course last week and discovered that the word 'flat' does not exist on this course. You are either going up or down. Pick one and take it.
The weather was PERFECT! Low 50s at race start and then during the post race festivities it was around 72. You cannot get any better than that.
I arrived early and walked around for a little bit. I sipped on some Cytomax and ate a Powerbar. Honestly this is the first time I have tried taking in nutrition before a race. It works! Before I knew it the horn went off and we were on our way. The first hill (long hill at that) was at the start of mile 2. It was nothing but a roller coaster from there on out. It went through Rancho Santa Fe which is one of the top 5 most expensive zip codes in the country. These are not houses, they are complexes. Stunning.
I Gu'ed up at mile 8 (lemon lime with caffeine!!) and pretty much negative splitted the race. I am posting split times just so you can get an idea for the hills.
Beautifully executed race. I could not have asked for better. This tells me that my fitness is climbing and I am on the right track for Ironman St George. Today was a great confidence booster as well as a great workout. $35 entry fee for this gorgeous course and a long sleeve tech t. BONUS: I won a free massage in a drawing afterwards!

They posted some results on the board. It seems I placed 10th in my age group and 70 something overall out of 2600 runners.
Time for a nap.

Been thinking about you and the race all day, especially since I sometimes ride my bike around there and know what you were up against. So happy to hear everything went so well. Bravo!
