tired Penasquitos Canyon 11.25 mi 01:28 07:51 pace

I ran on the south side trail because the north side is under construction. I planned on running nice and easy, but nice and easy felt labored during the middle miles. There are some short, but ste... read more

Night time training run with my Ragnar team. We all ran together, and we took it nice and slow. It must have been a site seeing us all running through the park with our headlights, reflective vests... read more

Mac-a-doodle was dragging some tail this morning. Ah well, it was another beautiful morning. There will be another run later this evening.

  5. Something is wrong here. Why do I have more miles this week thus far than the Mileage Monsters Caleb M. and Matthew L. ?

  6. RUN
    great Easy Run™ 8.13 mi 01:02 07:39 pace

I wore my heart rate monitor during this run. It has been a long time since I last ran with it. 8 miles, 7:40 easy run average pace on a hilly route, average heart rate was 138. Yup, kept it easy.

  7. RUN
great Easy 4S Ranch Loop 8.14 mi 01:00 07:19 pace

My legs felt great this morning! I guess 2 days away at a spa will do that to you. Finished off with a fast last mile. What a beautiful morning!

great Warmies and Coolies 7.2 mi 00:56 07:45 pace

1.2 miles warm up before the race. The bathroom line was longer than expected and I barely made it to the start line in time. Yikes.

17:36 (5:40/mile) It was a perfect morning for a race. There was no wind, mid 50s, and a warm sunshine. I am proud of my performance here. I held on mentally the whole time. My goal was to run betw... read more

great Easy 6 with strides 6.32 mi 00:46 07:20 pace

My legs felt really snappy this morning. In order to "taper" for Saturday's 5K, I only ran 6 instead of 8 miles. I wanted to feel fast, so I added some :20 - :30 strides in during the fin... read more

    great Easy Run™ 8.13 mi 01:02 07:35 pace

It was a chilly and foggy morning - perfect for running. During this run I thought about my upcoming 5K on Saturday. I am more concerned with my mental endurance than I am my physical ability. I fe... read more

My big thing with 5k's is to go out hard and DON'T be looking at your watch. People get too much in their own head during a 5k thinking they went out too fast, then that's a negative feedback loop that makes you second guess fitness, etc. If you need to check the watch, wait until you're halfway done. Also, just keep reminding yourself that it's a 5k and you've completed lots of longer races...you have plenty of endurance for such a short race.

Rebekah kind of summed up what I tell the kids.
I like looking at my watch because I have a habit of backing off in the middle mile; it helps to push me as I know what I am capable of.
I also like to focus on my form when I start to get tired, it helps keep my stride in check which keeps me more fluid/fast.
If you don't feel like you are going to throw up at the end, you didn't race it hard enough. :)
Remember, the discomfort will be over in less than ~17 minutes.

Less than 17 minutes for some people ... :) The physical pain doesn't bother me as much as mental weakness. My goal is to push my brain no matter what my legs are telling it.

  13. Shucks, I am 4 miles short for my January goal. Maybe an easy run this evening will fix this problem.

Thanks. The 82 was an accident. I was not trying to run that fast. These times are based on my 5K goal pace. I wanted to see what it felt like.
