#dailymission
Seeing the hard work that others put in to reach their goals, and knowing if they can do it, then so can I.

The other day I was bored and decided out of the blue to email the current 2000 meter rowing world champion for my age group and weight class. He also is currently the world leader in every distance from 1000 meters up to the marathon. By the end of the year, he wants to attempt world records for 100k and for a 24 hour row. He also attempted a trans atlantic row. I don't know him from Adam, but my email basically said that I was coming after him. In a nice tongue in cheek kind of way. Turns out that he, like many of the other elite athletes I've encountered, is not much different than many of us, having the same fears, doubts, and struggles that many of us do. Just a regular guy with lofty goals and an extra ordinary work ethic and talent to get him there. No shortcuts. He warmly welcomed my "challenge" and offered training advice and other tricks of the trade. He asked for a link to my training log and gave me a link to his, saying we could motivate each other. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer perhaps.

The goal doesn't have to become world champion. It could also be losing those extra few pounds. Or shaving some time off your next run or race. Or even just getting out the door every day to do something. Seeing others get the job done, whatever it may be. That's what motivates me.

Wow. Such a great post. I'm never sheepish to talk to anyone and it has helped me professionally, academically and in athletics. Sounds like you're the same way. Excited to see you take on the challenge!

Outstanding post and mindset Bob. I'm glad he responded the way he did. I find most in that echelon are indeed real people too, like you said. Go get 'im! And you're right...witnessing human achievement is pretty darned motivating! That said, keep up your good work...you've been a MAJOR motivator to me for the past year & a half or so!

Exactly, Bob! This is exactly the way I feel toward my fellow AG competitors. I respect them immensely but live to beat them in competition. I wrote a story about Keith Long on Examiner.com for this very reason.

@Sarah- we're all just people on the inside. @SteveShep- I look at the struggles you have, yet you keep plugging, and helping others along the way. One of my heroes here on DM. @SteveP- I'm 6'0", and around 160lbs right now. When prepping for Boston, I was hanging around 155lbs before I got hurt. @Joe- I don't think so. No trans atlantic rowing for me! @Winston- I love to see when athletes share a mutual respect for each others abilities, but then the kids gloves come off when it's time!

Go get him Bob !!! That's like somebody was asking me if I felt I'd be ready for Grandfather Mountain , I told them I wasn't just going to finish , I'm trying to place in the 40-44 age group . The Master's is a little faster but I feel confident on a top 3 in ag . I'll train that way anyways !!
