Sorry about the DNF. I had to take a DNF last year due to a metatarsal stress fracture and to make it worse I couldn't run for another month. I hope your ankle heals quickly so you can be back at it soon!

Nice running Brian. Almost came down for that one. Maybe next year. Still great run. And best wishes healing!!

Man, running 65.5 miles and still a DNF just sucks! It's an incredible distance!

  2. #dailymission (Training can be serious business, but incorporating fun is key, too. How do you do that?) Have you seen my training? I haven't taken it seriously in months. Not an issue.

Thought on the run: Whoever said you need to recover 1 day for every mile you raced is way off. If you need a week to bounce back from a 10K you may need another hobby for now.

I totally agree! Although I don't have your speed or stamina I find that more than a day or two of no running leaves me itching to hit the pavement, whether I've done 2 or 20 miles in the day(s) before. Keep up your inspiring posts Brian! You rock!

I think it depends on how you define racing. While I mostly agree I also know that too much too soon leads to injury. Don't ask me how I know.

Heh, Greg in your case it may be how you define recovery!

Grandma's for sure. BQ'd there too. Duluth and Lake Superior are beautiful. I went back in September for a weekend of sightseeing.

More gear testing, this time with the new pack and a sampling of contents. Good thing this race is flat; going up and down hills with the extra few pounds on my back was tougher than I expected.

Packs are interesting beasts. I trained with one intending to use it, and ended up dropping it after the first loop. What are you hoping to use it for?

Carrying food and a change of shoes. Aid stations are 25 miles apart (unmanned water midway between each). Course goes from gravel to paved around mile 100 so I'm taking my road shoes to change into. No chance of ditching it!

Um, yeah, I'd say that means you're carrying a pack! I think I would've kept mine yesterday had the aid stations not been so close (furthest was 4.4 miles) and had I not had the extra weight of the mud already bogging me down. I can't imagine, yet, the mostly self supported runs. Seeing aid stations was like heavens opening and angels singing.
