Felt like climbing. Now, Pirangut Ghat is not exactly a Ghat. It is short (<3km) but reasonably steep. Couldn't get into any good rhythm. So just did a brute force climb. On the way back swung by NDA gate and then the house construction site. Passed Divya on the opposite side around Garden Court.

hey, later i wished i'd stopped to chat with you! been a while!

By the time I unclipped (a task worth mentioning :-)) and looked back you had disappeared around the bend. Next time.

I envy the terrain you get to ride on. I'm sure the altitude and the grade of the course makes one a better rider! keep riding!

Melvin, Pune is a bit of a hilly area. At the same time max elevation on any hills around here is < 1200m. So hills not very tall either. Id it like Philippines just does not have hills or that Manila is flat?

whoa - u are going to remove the "ghat" suffix from all the climbs around Pune :-)
BTW do u know how much category each climbs around Pune is (TDF style) for self gratification ?

As a matter of fact I have Pioneered a Climb Grading Scheme. Unfortunately it did not get much traction on BZ.
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Apfb7IJaTsR2dFB4UVZiajRYaHl3TjRpTUVxR0J5Rnc&hl=en#gid=1
As per that index Pirangut is a Cat 4, Lavasa is a low CAT2, Sinhaghad is a high CAT2.
Many people have added data into this sheet.

Thats interesting. How did you arrive at the formula for deg of difficulty? Is it a standard for rides like TDF? What exactly is the formula?=D3^1.5*E3^1.02. What is that funny symbol?

Doc, check the dead horse thread at BZ. Wonder how you missed it.

There are explanations on the spreadsheet in another tab sheet.
Difficulty Index = (Gradient ^ 1.5) x (Length ^ 1.02) , ( ^ --> raised to the power of)
I do not think French uses any empirical formula. They just take a long hard look at the climb and mark it HC and walk away. This is for lesser mortals.

Will do but whats the ^ symbol mean?

x^y = x raised to the power of y

Grading scheme is really cool.

Boni- what would Haleakala be on your grading scheme. Its 5%, 60 km long. Too lazy to do the math

@arvind: 728 (CAT1, there is no HC in this scale now), Would be the toughest reported so far :-)

Well, it certainly felt that way. Yet to get my ride report done. Will do soon. Its long overdue...

So 728 is Cat 1? And what is HC then? Beyond what number?

The southern approach for Col de la Madeleine is 19.3km and 8% average. In my humble scale this HC climb is rated at 458. we never got to fixing HC category. But since it is my index I will say anything > 400 is HC. Just to substantiate, Col Agnel, featured in TDF 2008 as HC is 22.4 , 6.% = 395.
