I think this run qualifies as a fail. I was pretty beat after my late day pace run yesterday and although I got a good night sleep, I still felt pretty tired this morning. I hesitated on even going for my long run today, but in the end decided to go for it. Choosing the hills was, in retrospect, not one of my smarter moves. This was my first time going all the way to Heartbreak Hill, the last of the Newton Hills. Despite what you may have heard, it lives up to its name quite well, or at least did for me today. It was hot and humid and I was dying. Had to take a walk break half way up. When I go to the halfway point at Boston College, I had to sit down for several minutes. Getting home was rough. I settled into a walk / run routine, doing .1 to .2 miles walking and .3 to .5 miles running. Eventually made it back though it felt like it took an eternity.

No 11 miler can be called a fail, Keith! These tough runs test your mettle and you made it through, hills and all. Good work out there today, mental and physical. That next run will feel easy compared to this one.

I'm sorry, I had to laugh at your assessment of Heartbreak. :) But it was an ironic laugh, I swear! One encouraging aspect of this run though, is that long ones are really secondary to your half. You're doing well in your speedwork which is where the meat is, and you still have plenty of time to get the few long runs you absolutely need. You can let this one go, no penalty at all. :)

No, it was not a fail, Keith. It was just a long tough run, in tough conditions on a tough day.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm up for another 11 miler this week. But I intend to stick to my schedule this week, which will give me two full days off beforehand. I'll also get out before the heat. I'm sure it'll be much better.
