New rule - In the day prior to a distance race, the number of hours sleep I get will be higher than the number of alcoholic beverages I consume.
Yesterday was a long day - I was up early to get to the RU game, then raced back to NYC for a party and then went to the bar for the Miami game. Had a few drinks throughout the day and was planning on taking it easy in the evening... but the friends I was with knew the bartender and shots of jameson were not optional. Oh well.
Woke up early to take the ferry and was not feeling ready. I needed a few more hours of sleep. Fortunately, I ran into my old friend Khartoon at the ferry, along with her brother. We ended up running the full race together - Toon had been at Jay-Z last night and was tired as well, PLUS they were tacking 7 miles after the race so they had to pace themselves too. We started a fashionable 9 minutes after gun time – whoops!
We decided to have fun since we were so out of it. Danced around (while running, quite the sight), joked the whole time. I busted out my iphone to blast Survivor to help everyone around me get up the big hill in the race. Though I felt like death, we had a blast.
I have been doing my long runs at 9:30 pace but wanted to do this at marathon pace (8:45). Didn't happen, though the first mile was a 10:08 or so and I did have enough in the tank to sprint at the end.
Slowed down for my friends to use the bathroom and hydrate - and I took a bathroom stop at some point as well which is not included in the time above.
Most importantly - I used UCAN today for the full race (with a banana and Nuun throughout run) and didn't need a single gel!
