Race Recap..... and the story continues.
After finishing our second legs we headed to the next major exchange to get a little food and rest.
After gritty pancakes and spongy eggs (the orange juice was good) served at the local middle school.... we found a place to crash.... 3 of our runners sprawled in the van. Traegon H. Scott and I decided on the comfy accommodations on the gym floor and a sleeping bag. It always looks like we are refugees from a disaster sprawled with other stinky friends across the basketball courts of the local high school. Where are we, anyway?!!
Saying we slept is an exaggeration of the 1.5 hrs spent on the floor. But it was enough to re-energize us and the adrenaline sets in to finish up this beast. We are so close and our team is running quick and ahead of schedule. Van 1 destroyed their last legs with power and we were ready for the exchange.... ready for more cowbell, ready to see the finish.....
The sun was out and warming up the day, the scenery is beautiful. I'm ready at the last exhange, ready to see Brian H. come around the corner. He was running fast (and as we now know, with a broken foot that had started as a stress fracture during his first leg.... He is insane!!) than hand off.... and I take go and go fast, faster than I should of..... mile 1 flew by and mile 2 was a monster of a hill.... Why do they always put uphills at the end of races, it's cruel. I could hear the crowd noise as I started the last incline .... my team, the Cows...... they are there waiting for me, ready to cross this finish line.... ready to wear those well earned medals, ready to celebrate this Goliath of an achievement.... for as hard as it is to be runner 12, it was totally worth the finish.
Over cold beer and pizza we talked of our journey. Celebrated the team, the overcome, the power of the human body, Ragnar's great accomplishment of taking the ordinary men and woman away from the everyday to achieve the extraordinary.
Such a great race. Thank you South Park Cows for being an amazing team.
