I can only comment based on my personal experience. I corrected my overpronation by changing my running gait to a midfoot strike. How do I know this? By comparing my old shoes which I used with my old overpronating style (outer heel worn away) with my newer but over 200km run- Nike Free Runs. The wear on the outside is very light and most of the wear is concentrated on the middle where its supposed to be.

@ Melissa.....I plan to do the c25k once I feel better. I was just about to go out and I got sick...so once my fever passes I will start with walking, watching my footing, and then pick it up with a jog. I think it works better this way 'cause I have to train the puppy to walk/jog with me. :)

:) thanks yet again Martin. :) I'm not giving up, but I'm sure as heck going to relax a little until I see a doctor. I've been laying back, elevating my legs and that seems to help EXTREMELY! When I stand up my knees hurt so bad I feel like they are going to give out, it hurts on the inside of my legs/knees now, like I slammed them into something and they are majorly bruised. They are swollen a little. So im still going to see a doctor. But not giving up!!! Im getting a running buddy (puppy).

    • Stu A.

Wow Alicia! How did you do all that? Do you take a cold bath after running? If not, it sure sounds like you need to do that to keep the swelling down and help your recovery. Get well! The road will be there when you're able.

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like more than ordinary knee pain if the ice isn't helping. Elevating your legs may relieve the pain but go ahead and see a doctor for it. Hope you get well soon!

Hmm. Maybe you started too quickly. Your knees hurt when you push off? With each step? Would a walk/run help you ease into things? Maybe a 3 minute run and a 2 minute walk, repeated on a flat course? Just a thought....oh, and ice. It's your new best friend!

thanks guys. i really dunno if it's muscle soreness in the knees or something else. ive always had knee problems playing tennis and riding horses, but this feels way different. its subsided for the most part until i pick up a jog or i do the motion (or actually DO) a stair step....and it hurts on the sides of my knees. Any thoughts?

Hey Alicia, don't be hard on yourself. Everyone including the elite runners had to take their first steps with the blood, sweat and tears. You have the drive to make any goal possible and your "don't give up" attitude will help you reach your goal. Take it easy and listen to your body. Only you can be your best coach! Hope your pain in the knees goes away soon.

Hang in there and don't give up. You will get there. Pushing to hard will slow down your progress and break down your body. Remember that it's the resting periods that build muscle. I remember some one asked the following question here on Dailymile some time ago:

"If I start by running one lap around my block, and increase with one lap every day, will I get in better shape?"

The answer is: "No, you'll get injured"

I know it's hard but it's absolutley essential that you have patience.

Don't be discouraged, when I started out I couldn't run 300meters without a break. That was 7 months ago. 3 months after that I was running 10k's and now up to 37k. The start is the hardest but if you keep at it the rewards are immeasurable. And now that your 2 year old is joining in, it'll become a family thing :)

than you too :)....I use to play tennis and train a lot for it as well so I do have faith Ill get it its just a matter of when :). The thing Im finding the hardest is to fit in my newborn with the running; she's too tiny still to take with me, but she's a total mommy's girl so I end up running circles around her until she cries or needs me lol.
