      So, how does the open water swimming down there work? Can you only go when there are life guards? Or can you just go?

      Both way works, if life guard is not on duty aka beach access area is closed. You can walk into the water on the left side near the panic table. If the beach/changing area is open, you just walk in through the gate and tell them you are a triathlete/or show them your wetsuit, they will let you in for free. You swim all the way out to the bouy where the boater cannot pass, and then just hang a right and swim along the shore towards the marina
