Run felt fine, the aftermath is a little concerning.

Left achilles feels 'creaky' for lack of a better term. It's a strange and unpleasant sensation. The point of discomfort is where the tops of my running shoes make contact. Could this be caused by the friction of repeated runs across that point. Both are sore at that point with you pain in the muscle immediately above or down into my heel.
Ice? Heat?
Yikes...

When I had some A.R.T. does last week I was told that I had no soleus, gastroc, or achilles tightness that should cause this sort of discomfort, so I'm left to posit what it might be.

My legs feel fine after yesterday's effort. Perhaps I need new Mizunos and this will all go away. Yeah, too optimistic I'm sure.

Any tips, tricks, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Ice and heat are good. Also stretching with a rope works for me. I recently had a bunch of achilles problems.

    Here's some taping techniques: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285--8271-2-1-2,00.html

How are you running - on the ball of your foot? Did you recently switch up your stride or gait at all?

Massage is another option, and making sure your calves are flexible.

Here's a stretch you can do against the wall if you don't have a rope.

Oh, by the way - if you have a rope, loop it around the ball of your foot, and pull back on the ends. I like to do this while I'm standing up so that I can plant my heel on the ground and weight my leg so that I get the full stretch. I also like to do it with my shoes on, or sandals to keep the bottom of my foot semi-flat

Kathy, thanks for the tips. I do the stretch that you mentioned with a yoga belt and I'll check out the link! I really appreciate it!

I'm a midfoot striker but that's always been the case, I haven't recently changed stride or gait.

NO NO NO NO NO... Could not disagree more with Kathy. The "creaky" feeling is indicative of tendonitis. The fibers of your achilles are starting to rupture and are rubbing the sheath surrounding the tendon. Stretching tendonitis is a REALLY BAD idea as it can make the problem worse by putting stresses on unruptured fibers, causing them to become stressed as well. I would rest for a few day, and you shouldn't run again until the pain subsides.

Ahhhhh, the terrible creaky feeling - I didn't see that. Chaz is totally right - it could be tendinitis... which I've also had.

Have you been training a LOT lately, or switching up shoes?

And I couldn't AGREE more with Chaz - rest is pretty much the only way to help tendinitis. I'd get it checked out though. There's a great doc at UCSF who helped me with my tendinitis - I can refer you if you want?

Would love a referral. Alright, so no stretching - check!
Why isn't it uncomfortable when I run? That's the strange part. I've actually been doing more cross-training recently but haven't increased volume or frequency of running.

Sometimes tendonitis subsides or disappears when you run because the tendons warm up a bit. It is odd though that you wouldn't feel it at all, and maybe that's a good sign. Try both ice and heat... heat works better for some folks, and ice for others... It just depends.

Thanks so much Chaz. Yeah, I don't feel it at all when running. And even now after walking around a bit at work it is less creaky. I brought my ice pack to work so I'm going to wrap up my ankle with that while I'm sitting here.
