Worst run to date.
It was supposed to be 9 miles but I guess my calculations must have been off.
At around 1.5 miles, my shins started to hurt really bad. I stopped to walk and they almost hurt worse to walk. I thought about calling my wife around 2 miles but wanted to try a little further.
I've never had shin splints, so I don't know if that's what it was, or if it was just pain in my shins that I needed to "run through" or something.
I also had to use the bathroom so I did that around 3.5 miles and then started to slowly jog again. When I started again, the pain in my shins was gone and so I decided to just keep pushing through and do a run/walk combo for the remainder of the run.
I felt okay the rest of the time.
So, I have questions:
1) Could I have had shin splints? Or wouldn't those have KEPT hurting?
2) Should I have stopped instead of continuing with the run/walk method for the rest?
3) For the past 2-3 weeks, I've had a dull ache in my right hip...I've been trying to stretch it better but just can't figure out what it is...any ideas?
Man - this does NOT leave me encouraged for a 10 mile run next Saturday and then the half marathon the weekend after that....
Crap.

Were you fitted for your shoes? You know, did the running store check your gate and pronation, etc.? The wrong shoes can cause problems like that, especially as the miles increase.

Yup - definitely fitted at a good place....haven't had any problems with them in the 120 miles I've run in them since getting them...

We all have bad runs. I would definitely ice your shins tonight...for me it sometimes has nothing to do with the running shoes that I've been wearing, but rather the daily shoes that I have on. Did you recently switch to a flatter, less supportive shoe during the day?
I also spent some time with a chiropractor today. Sometimes running can throw your back/hips out of alignment. Maybe you need an adjustment.
You are doing great! I will be thinking of you on your half. Mine is in May!

Great suggestions, Jamie. I also have some ITB issues with my left hip from time to time. Stretching after the run is very important for limbering this up. I use the Sun Salutations Yoga poses as well as the front and side splits and the standard runner's stretches for hamstrings. My favorite stretch for my lower back and neck is The Plow pose. Not much you can do for shins other than ice and perhaps a chiropractic stick for myofacial release. Good luck!

Adam, bad runs happen to everyone. The longer the run the more painful they can be. My suggestions, get a roller and stretch your IT band, your calves and also your hip areas. I would also take some Ibuprofen, I prefer Motrin. Icing and cold baths can help recovery. I gets painful for me at the high mileages but the more I run the faster I recover. Pain happens, embrace it is my theory! Stretch often! If you are having sharp pains still in your shins, you may very likely have shin splints.
