First run back since doing my half marathon in May of 2010 - so....I think I pushed it a little too hard....and am pretty sore now. But...I ran the whole thing, didn't walk.

good to hear you are running again! for shoes, it would be around 500 miles.

I've heard anywhere between 250 and 500 miles. I don't track shoe miles well -- never have -- but I try to have two pairs that I alternate, which is supposed to keep them in good condition longer.
In a horrible non-answer, your next goal depends entirely on you. If having a race in your future keeps you accountable, then sign up for one. (I'm doing the Giant Half in SF on June 12th -- just a thought.) Or maybe join a challenge here on the site. Can't wait to hear what you decide!

Blisters: Are you wearing socks that have good enough padding? I get blisters when I wear my really thin cotton socks, but not (so much) with slightly thicker wool.

I just have one kind of sock that I wear - but I think they're good because they were recommended by the running store.

I like wool and synthetic socks, generally. Cotton socks over 5-7 miles gives me blisters, even with Body Glide between my toes. Good luck on your Half! Next weekend?

Were you fitted for your shoes? You know, did the running store check your gate and pronation, etc.? The wrong shoes can cause problems like that, especially as the miles increase.

Great suggestions, Jamie. I also have some ITB issues with my left hip from time to time. Stretching after the run is very important for limbering this up. I use the Sun Salutations Yoga poses as well as the front and side splits and the standard runner's stretches for hamstrings. My favorite stretch for my lower back and neck is The Plow pose. Not much you can do for shins other than ice and perhaps a chiropractic stick for myofacial release. Good luck!

Adam, bad runs happen to everyone. The longer the run the more painful they can be. My suggestions, get a roller and stretch your IT band, your calves and also your hip areas. I would also take some Ibuprofen, I prefer Motrin. Icing and cold baths can help recovery. I gets painful for me at the high mileages but the more I run the faster I recover. Pain happens, embrace it is my theory! Stretch often! If you are having sharp pains still in your shins, you may very likely have shin splints.

Yah man --- I went to the running store today "Fleet Feet" (awesome place) and talked with them and was just reassured that however I've been running that's been working for me for 9 weeks now....STAY with it. And yah, heel-toe was confirmed as bad.
Sucks that I had to learn the hard way.
Now just trying to figure out why my right hip is hurting.
