Day 221. Up at 4:30 to get out before dawn for a monster training run. Aid station simulation: the route consisted of out and backs tailored to meet the distances outlined here: http://www.vermont50.com/html/aid_stations.html. Here's how it went.

To Coon Club:
Started out with a 420' climb to the center of town and back. At the "aid station" (my kitchen) I ditched the headlamp and grabbed sunglasses. As the sun rose, it revealed a thick layer of soup that let me know I was in for a hell of a humid run.

To Dart's:
Ran on a woodsy road that Rebecca and I often frequent in the mornings. Startled a small fox. Moments later, I startled an old man out for his morning walk. "I didn't expect to see anyone out here this early. How far you going?", "I don't know. A marathon maybe.", "God bless you, God bless you son."

To Skunk Hollow:
Out and back on my street. Nothing really to report, except some wild turkeys.

To Garvin Hill:
This is the toughest part of the route. 7 miles of hill repeats on the rail trail behind my house. Mentally and physically exhausting.

To Cady Brook:
Up until this point, I had been listening to some Dirty Projectors. The odd-ball harmonies and instrumentation kept my mind preoccupied. Now I switched it up to some good old fashioned gangsta shit - Snoop Lion style. Ran the single track hills to the tire swing. Rolled my ankle at about 20.5, but it didn't seem too serious so I kept on going.

Not quite to Margaritaville:
It was getting hotter (after 9am). Already in the 80's with about 8-kajillion % humidity. After 23.2, I had a quarter of a sunflower-butter/jelly sandwich and headed back out for 3. Lots of walk breaks at first but I actually settled into around a 9:30ish mile for a about a half mile in the 25th mile.

As I rounded the corner toward home, I stopped to talk to a woman walking her dog. She said "You sure are brave to be out here walking in this.", "I'm actually about a half-mile away from finishing a marathon.", "What!? You want some gatorade?" :)

Now I'm home, lying on the floor, fighting off cramps and random spasms that are not exactly pleasant. But, the run is done, and I felt pretty good most of the way. Despite rolling it, the ankle feels OK. My feet are sore, as expected. I know I'll have an epsom salt bath later, but for now, I'm hopping in the ice. We've got to get on the road to my nephew's 2nd birthday party.

Wrist bitch says 3340ft up and 3186ft down. Pretty bad-ass for a marathon.

    That's awesome, Adam! I've never been inspired to run a marathon distance unless it's an actual marathon race! So cool that you did this awesome training run. Looking good for the VT50!
