Mildly disappointed with a 12-year 5K PR at 18:17 because I was hoping for sub-18. Oh well, 5th overall and 1st age group isn't so bad. The winner (Craig Curley) ran 14:40-something. No joke. I guess he ran 2:19 marathon in December. It was a decently close race, too, with 2nd place running right at 15:00, a senior high schooler headed to NAU next year. For an inaugural race with about 100 people in it (my number was 68 and I registered 35 minutes before the start) I'd say that's pretty fast. anyway, it was apparent at the beginning that it was a thin but fast field because two runners shot straight out like a cannon and I found myself in 6th place at about 400m.
My 3-yo son and all his aunts and uncles and I ran the 1 mile fun run (11:30-ish) but he pretty much didn't stop running all day. This kid loves to run and he seems to pace naturally, aside from the sprint start, which is also pretty cool.
What was also very interesting to me was that I ran the 5K with my HRM and about 400m into the race I looked down and saw "174" which some of you may recognize as 5 bpm off the max I got for my max HR test. Anyway, the whole 5K was run with the HR between 170 and 179. I'm not sure what that means but it's still interesting.
Update on splits: 5:56.8, 5:56.9, 5:48+35
Good start to the new year regardless. Happy running, 2013!
