good 20 Mile Run - New Distance Record 20 mi 03:55 11:44 pace

Hal: "Run 20 miles... 45 to 90 seconds slower than race pace." Holding back on the pace today was no problem, with this distance coming after 10 yesterday! This was a tough run, unexpectedly so, since last week's 19 didn't seem that difficult. However, last week was the first increasing week after a recovery week, so I guess I was a little fresher. Today, my legs started screaming at about mile 15. I tried Keith's strategy and told them to shut up, but they didn't listen! This week was exactly 5 miles more total than last week, Hal tried to be clever and sneak in one extra mile on each day's run. Nice try, Hal, but my legs weren't fooled. At mile 15, they realized they'd run as far as they had last week, and tried to tell me that they weren't going any farther. So the last 5 miles were all about the mental battle. That is actually a good thing. It should be good preparation for the similar battle in the last miles of the marathon. Another perfect running morning, 44 F as I went out the door at 7:20 AM, abundant sunshine and 71 as I finished almost 4 hours later.

Good work on the mental struggle, Vern - I totally get to that same point on just about every one of my long runs. Sounds like it was a beautiful day!

So proud of you for toughing it out. WOW. Makes me feel like my 6 miler today is just a quick walk though the park! I felt the same way in my last mile though. Legs were not happy and it was all a mental game after that.

Excellent 20 mile run Vern, made more difficult after a 10 mile run the previous day, not very easy to do!! You are making great progress both on the physical front as well as the mental, well done!

Thank you all for the nice comments! A note on toughing out the last 5 miles-- at mile 15, when I turned the corner to start the final pass on the inner loop of this trail, giving up really wasn't an option! Secret strategy: Running from home to the trail and back is extra incentive to succeed! At the end of the run, if I don't finish the miles, I don't get home!

Great job, Vern. That 20-miler is always a tough one. But you're right, it's great mental prep for the actual race. And I love your comment about the extra incentive...I've undershot my distances a few times and have had to run some extra miles to get back home...haha! Again, aweeesome work!
