ULTRA: My first ultra, and what a weather it was: the heat wave continues. It was a freaking +24 Celsius and the sun was shining from cloudless sky for most of the time. There were some merciful darker clouds around 6:00--6:30 of the way, and I could swear the temperatures then dropped to +22 or at least to +23 Celsius for a while, but that didn't last and the final hour was sheer torture again. The way I did this was I ran for 15 minutes and then walked for 2 minutes; but after every about 10K of running I had a real break instead of a walking break -- I had made my study room at the University my base camp for this run and had there these maintenance breaks of about 10-15 minutes. During those maintenance breaks I would sit down, have a little more to drink and try to eat something; and as it turned out to be such a warm day I also showered my head and neck and shirt to help me keep my body cooler. Anyways, it was very hard, especially the last 10K. Glad to be alive after this one. But it wasn't as bad as the 38K a few weeks back, the one for which I didn't have enough to drink. Today the weather was just awful for an ultra, and I did 52.2K, but still I guess I feel somewhat better than I did after the 38K. But of course, now I was better prepared, better equipped. Had enough to drink, 2.5 liters of sports drink (ca. 5%) plus 0.5 liters of Coke plus as much water in the faucet I would like to drink. The problem was, I couldn't get down as much as I would have liked to. I tried to take in 0.5 liters of sports drink per 1:15 or so and fill in with some water. But I had a hard time taking even that much in, even though it was such a warm day: every time I tried to drink more than just a few sips I would start to feel bloated. So I drank what I could, which was perhaps 0.3 liters of sports drink per hour for the first four or five hours, plus some water (maybe 0.2 liters per hour, in average), but the feeling of not getting the fluids through my gut just got worse and worse toward the end and finally I was taking only very little sips and pouring the rest of the drinks onto my shirt to keep it wet and cool. Luckily the 100 ml of water and chia seeds that I took during my last maintenance break did sit quite well into my stomach and gave me energy for the last 1:30 or so.

Olin päättänyt, että yli 50 kilsaa on saatava, jos vain nesteet jotenkin suostuu imeytymään. Kyllä ne sitten just sen verran imeytyi. Se 52 kilsaa oli sekin jo etukäteen mietitty, mutta olisin voinut hätätapauksessa jättää pikkasen kesken ja tyytyä johonkin 50-51 kilsaan, jos ois ihan pakko ollut.
