NYC Half 2012 - Done Did It! 13.67 mi 02:09 09:28 pace

Hmm. My Nike+ says 13.672 at 2:09:27 (musta started early, oops) and the official line from the race says 13.1 in 2:09:42... so... somebody is lying. Either way, it was a rough first race for me. At mile 3, my left knee tightened up. I had to walk quite a bit, especially on mile 10 and 11 when the knee pain really kicked in. All in all, it was an amazing race and I am still very proud of my time despite wanting 5-6 minutes less. Running through Central Park, Times Square and some of the best streets in the world is so fantastic. I also think I was too pumped up for this as I killed it the first few miles... Mile 1 7:54, Mile 2 7:52.. Some of my fastest ever. Thanks for all the love and support to my DM friends. Next Half is in 8 weeks so any advice regarding strengthening my knee over the next 2 months would def be welcome.

well your nike is prob off because you def lost signal in the tunnel, and the signal was prob very weak along 7th ave/42nd. also, you prob didn't cut the tangents well either (i suck at those personally) so that adds mileage. great job for your first 13.1!

Great race! That is a fantastic time, even if it is slower than you wanted. What kind of knee pain are you having? I had knee problems last year, and just did a lot of biking (on gym bikes), swimming, and yoga to make up for lack of exercise (I stopped running completely). I don't know if that helped strengthen my knees at all, but cross training never hurts, right?

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the support. @Corey - I think I just have runners knee. Tight and gets painful as the patella tendon swells and makes the knee cap hurt. When I ice, stretch, Advil, compress, etc it feels better but this is now two straight long runs with this pain. Ugh. I think I just need to strengthen the leg/knee and it should be better next time.

Congrats on a great race - way to push through! Sorry to hear about your knee, hope it's feeling better in time for your next race. Sounds like you've got enough time between that it's likely! Love the pic of the celebration cake - so cool! :)

Btw, I always over-run the course distance. I think yesterday I did so by .25mi. I always go by my actual distance & time - that's the real picture of all the hard work :)

I also experience runners knee from training and my PT had me work in alot of hip strengthening exercise. Apparently a lot of knee pain is the result of weak hips. Try doing leg lifts with ankle weights, monster walks with a resistance band and clamshells with a resistance band. They also had me work on strengthening all of the muscles around the knee, quads and hamstrings using traditional free weights and machines. Cute cake! Your wife is talented!

Thanks so much for the love and support everyone. Knee is feeling better and I am going to test it tonight. Really appreciate all the advice that some of you gave re: strengthening the knee, legs, hips, etc Going to use them all. Also thanks for the comments on the cake. I basically ate the whole thing, hence the reason I gotta get back on the horse and run tonight!
