My journey to becoming an Ironman
Ive been getting asked a lot about my journey to becoming an Ironman and truth is I don’t really have one.
Im really a runner and ive done a handful of marathons. I also would ride my hybrid a bit for two a days but the furthest I ever rode on that was 32 miles. I signed up for the Ironman knowing it would be a challenge in July 2011. I love challenges and do not back down. I had no plans of doing a triathlon before it…yes this would be my first triathlon. I was afraid to buy a road bike bc I dislike going fast and was scared to death of falling and breaking something especially bc im more fragile than others…I finally took the plunge and bought a road bike September 24th 2011. I rode it a few times before it got very cold out and by December 2011 the furthest I ever rode was 50 miles…by May 2012 the furthest I ever rode was 68 miles. These last couple months I have really put in most of my training for the Ironman.
Swimming…never swam laps before January 19th 2012. I looked at a youtube video to see proper form before I went that day and that is all. For training I would go to the pool 2 or 3 times a week and swim. My first Open water swim was 2.4 miles in Lavalette Bay in May 2012. I legit had a panic attack within the first 50m and I remember thinking fuck, how am I going to do this for the Ironman? But I pulled myself together and finished in a decent time.
It takes dedication and discipline but truly anyone can do it…On July 22 2012 I became an Ironman and I trained myself in less than 6 months following no specific plan…and I finished and placed in my division and had a smile on my face. You should try one!!!
