good Loops from the house. 18.07 mi 02:45 09:08 pace

Told myself to run this very, very easy. I set up a little water stop at the electric box outside my house, and did three loops. I had water, Skratch mix, gels, and any other odds and ends I might need, including the Orb ball, glide, calf sleeves, a new shirt, and a change of shoes. I was worried about these Bostons being just a little too minimal. And I think that might be an issue now.

I ran the first two loops with the only stops being for traffic and dogs. So many nice doggos today (Zac, Blackjack, random littles, Worlds Happiest Pitbull, and deaf playful dog). Before the final loop, I changed into a dry tank, and rolled my gluteus minimus and hips with the Orb ball. Helped a LOT for the next few miles. But then, my lower legs just gave up. So much pain. I stopped twice in the 14th mile to collect myself and stretch the lower legs. But it didn't really help, so I just pressed on. Stopped one last time before the last mile to correct a major chaffing issue. By the end, my lower legs were DONE. I was limping to the front door. I have plenty of fitness. My avg heart rate was just 140 and I never felt anything even resembling winded at this pace. I just have so much body revolt. Thinking I should probably trade the shoes in for something with more cushion... the Pure Flows were my next in line. Even if it's something I could get over, IM is only a few weeks away and I can't really afford to wait it out. If a little cushion will help me out, I'll take it.

I am not an expert on shoes, but I do run with Hokas and appreciate the extra cushion over Brooks. And within Hoka, there are major differences. Some feel "bigger" than others. Although, you had a tough finish, you got really far at a good pace. I hope you can tweak the fit a little and then set yourself up for a good race. Clearly the last few miles will suck no matter what and you are mentally able to push forward--a good thing!

Considering all you have been dealing with for running lately, I would call this one a huge win. You knocked out 18 miles at more or less an even pace. The shoes are a tough call. You are getting close to the point where it is a bad idea to change out things. I also know how much that particular type of shoe can feel after long runs. If you are going to stick with the advice to not rotate, you probably need to give the Pure Flows a shot. I rotated and had good success with the Adidas.

I know, I had a lot more mental strength today than usual. So that is good. But man I hurt. I tried Hokas, but I wasn't impressed TBH. They had this rocker thing in them and they felt a little unstable. Are there Hoka without that?

One other point that you may not have thought of: Brooks do not have a theme song. ;)

I think there are a few that might have "less" of a rocker. I got used to it very fast and don't even notice it. Unless I'm walking in old ones (and even then, only for a moment). Chris is right, changing things now is iffy. Especially since you need "broken in" shoes. I was just hoping we had enough time to consider an alternative. Whatever the brand.

Hopefully going to a run clinic at my shoe shop on Saturday. It's hosted by Brooks and they're showcasing some new shoe.

This was a real gut check Stephanie - you made your way through a lot! I hope you can figure this out.

I think I would be okay to try a new pair, and intend to now. In fact, I'm going to tell them I want them to put the other pair aside for me, so if I have to come back for them I get a broken in pair. But I need more cushion. So I'll try the Hoka and Pure Flow back to back and see what I like better. It's good to know that "rocker" feeling is something you stop noticing,

I'm just realizing that my Hoka Vanquishes hardly have any "rocker" to them... FWIW. But the Bondi's have more cushion I think.

I think I only tried the Clifton. My local running store has a line up, but I'm not sure the Big Peach store I got my other shoes from does.
