I ran across this blog post today and although it is on a marketing blog, I think it applies to athletic competition too.

Yea. I've wondered after the half if I need to stop tracking for a bit, and just run cause its fun. Not worry about times or distance or whatever. Kwim?

I'm so slow that I keep saying that my only competition is with myself. Now I won't feel like such a dork when I think that. :)

It took me a long time before I stopped comparing myself to other runners, my time with their time, etc. It kind of took the joy out of running, always feeling like I wasn't a good enough runner b/c I wasn't as fast. Now I just focus on myself and what I can do and in races the goal is just to try to beat my previous times. Who cares if I don't finish in the top 10, or even the top half? Just compete with yourself!
