Testing my zones tonight with this 5k. Ran 8:30 pace first mile, 9:20 second, and 7:30 third. Remained under 142 beats and stayed in zone 3 the entire first mile, 2nd mile had quite a bit of incline so heart rate rose and stayed around 152, then let loose on the last mile and fully expected to hit the 180's but hovered around 163. Last time I did that around 9-10 months ago I did hit the 180's! Of course it was only 76 degrees when I ran, and this made a significant difference as compared to the 86 temp last week, but it's interesting how much stronger my cardio system is compared to last year. Looking at several books to help me sort out all this info, but the Public Library has the one I was looking a buying (it's out of course) so going to put in a request and see if I can snatch it and maybe learn something. Little man is running his first lone 5k in the morning...so excited for him! If any of my Lville peeps are running the Zoo run, watch out for the little speed demon in the orange running shirt! I thinks he excited because he knows he's going to have some competition in his age group tomorrow! Can't wait to see the time he pulls on those hills!

Isn't it great to get a scientific atta boy! The book at the library is good. You just can't plan on building speed if you're base building. I liked the no nonsense language in a book that had a title like HR Training for Compleat Idiots. Go Austin!!! I can't wait to read the post.

That's where I'm at right now Lisa. I'm not trying to train for speed, but if I keep training Austin, I'm going to be doing a speedy 5k at least 1-2x's a week and wondering if that will offset anybase building I do the rest of the week. The one the Library carries is the one by Roy Benson.
