  1. 26.2 - accomplished! It took 5 hours and 36 minutes and my knee is wrecked but I have my very first medal. My daughter jumped in and ran me home the last half mile to the chute. Worth every minute!!!!

  2. RUN
great Last taper run 1 mi

Did this run "naked" ~ no Garmin, no music, nothing. Just enjoyed being out and loosening up. I'm ready.

  3. walk
    good Taper 1 mi

Knee a bit sore so I backed off ... No point in pushing it now. I'm planning a short run tomorrow and then that's it before the race!

  4. How I love this quote . . .
"I used to feel pretty sometimes. And then I started running. It was hard. My face was red, I would sweat profusely, my nose would run when it was cold, and no matt... read more

  5. RUN
    good Taper 2 mi 00:20 10:13 pace

78 degrees and humid but overcast, so not too bad. Just two miles to keep things loose. Getting close now!

  6. FIT
good Taper ~ incline walk, yoga

Supposed to be a rest day so I limited myself to some easy incline walking on the dreadmill and did a gentle yoga series to loosen up.

  7. Any running vets have tips to share on running long in the heat? Looks like race day might be warmer than pleasant.

I do this thing where I take icecubes wrap them in a bandana then tie that around my neck... and I always stay on top of hydration.

Wear white. take an extra cup of water and toss it on you. and- slow down. there are plenty of tables around that show how much you need to slow down with the heat. don't listen to them- and it's a quick trip to the medical tent.

Hydration, electrolytes, and slow it down. Start now drinking extra every day. Don't pass any aid station without getting a drink. Take a lot off of your normal pace. In hot weather, it's not about time-- it's about finishing and staying healthy.

wear as little as possible, don't forget the sun block, keep an eye on your heart rate, salt capsules taken every 40 mins depending on how much you sweat :)

  8. #dailymission Q: Why do you do that to yourself? (i.e., endurance running)
    A: I'm scared to ride a bike.

  9. RUN
good Taper 4-pack on the treadmill 4 mi 00:42 10:30 pace

Did a four-pack of miles: one at tempo, one of hills, one at race pace, and one walking. This will probably be the last "long" run of my taper before the race. Felt pretty good, and I'm r... read more

Vern ~ thank you, and I truly hope so. I'll take all the well wishes I can get!!
Sang ~ I'm not sure about tough, but I have been called "strong willed" more than once. Not sure that's complimentary, but in this case, I'm banking on it. Thanks for your support!

  10. I need some fresh ideas for runner-friendly breakfasts (not necessarily pre-workout, just everyday meals). What do you eat to get you started in the morning?

I love to eat oatmeal or a bagel with peanut butter and a half a banana. Both with coffee of course! :)

I eat oatmeal, banana, and juice almost every morning. Sometimes grapefruit or pineapple in addition, or a fruit smoothie.

  12. walk
good Taper trail walk 10 mi

Great walk on a gorgeous trail with my mom. Decent pace but not pushing it. Saw 3 beaver lodges, which was pretty cool.

  13. walk

2 miles around the 'hood with my daughter. Just to keep the legs loose for tomorrow's workout. Marathon next Sunday!!

  14. RUN
    good Taper run 4 mi

Warm, sunny miles. :) For some reason, I was starving when I finished. Had to eat before I did anything else.

I know where you're coming from. I hurt my knee training for my 2011 marathon. Part of me thought I should drop out, but I changed my goal from PR to just finish and did it anyway. Second half was painful and slow, but I was glad to finish. Hit it again this year, and got my PR! Good luck!

Sorry to hear that knee is still being bothersome. Hopefully the next few weeks of taking it easy will make it better on race day.

  20. Anyone out there run a marathon on a meniscal tear? If so, any advice you'd care to share?

    • Dean N.
      Dean N.

If you got a tear is actually worth trying to do the marathon, think of bigger picture , could become worse problem. How long you got to marathon. I took 2 weeks out just kept up cardio on bike as I'd done the mileage. Not the same injury
