Q: What is a good resource on starting a half marathon training program? RW? Never done one before, don't even know where to start!

RW is a good place to start. Check out Jeff Galloway's site, too. There are some training plans there at http://jeffgalloway.com/training/index.html

Coolrunning.com has some training plans at http://coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/index.shtml

Hal Higdon weighs in on his half marathon training plans at http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm

I'm sure there are others. Good luck!

I use Chi-running (book by Danny Dreyer), but I really should be cross training more. =)

I have used Runner's World three times and it has worked out for me quite well. I do cross train on the days off from running.

RW is a nice plan because it gives you pace goals (you need to do your training runs at a slower pace than you are used to. Also check McMillan for various paces). Personally, I don't think RW has you run often enough. I think you need to run four or five days a week.

Which race are you training for first? Carlsbad?

Runners World and Hal Higdon are excellent starting points. Runners World just started a whole series of Half Marathon articles (beginning in July). You've got the 'Half-Marathon Challenge' (http://tinyurl.com/lzfjdt) and 'The Half Marathon Special' (http://tinyurl.com/nllvhg) and 'Your Ultimate Half Marathon Training Plan' (http://tinyurl.com/2eejqt). And everything by Higdon is excellent.

Oh... if you don't want to go with a generic plan, you can always hire me as an online coach. I'll personalize it specifically to your needs. :-)

Check out Portland Fit’s schedule. They have a really good schedule both fasties (Blue Group: sub 8/min. mile) and slow-pokes (like me who belongs to Red Group: 10+/min. mile) http://www.portlandfit.com/site/schedule.shtml. This is the group I joined when I first ran my half-marathon and full marathon. The schedule is self-explanatory but let me know if you have any questions.

Check out Tom Holland's book, The Marathon Method. Good training plan for beginner 1/2 and full marathon, plus tons of advice and photo annotated core exercise routines. Heavy focus on training to be injury-free (key when upping the miles) http://tinyurl.com/mhq585

    Good luck!
