Q: Want to bike after my run tom prob just 5 miles or so. Will this help w/ races?I would want to bike on days I don't feel like running Thx

Cycling is a great cross training. I do it, but I am not fast, however, it has helped me build endurance.

I do Tri's and usually I do bricks where I bike then I go running: it helps my legs get used to the change from one sport to the other.

I probably sound like a newbie when I ask this, but what exactly are Bricks? I have read posts about it, and it sounds like running and then biking? I could be way off base on this..

Bricks are just training on two disciplines back to back. It could be swimming to biking or or biking to running. It gets your body used to changing sports within the same workout.

If found this link that explains more about bricks: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Enrico%20Contolini/Introduction_to_bricks.htm

I think cycling is an excellent way to cross-train to keep your endurance up while letting your bones rest from all that high-impact. It's amazing how you handle hills differently too after conquering them on a bike. Much easier when you're on your feet.

Phong, using biking as a cool down after running is a great idea. I would suggest starting out with very easy riding - the same effort level as a cool down run. You'll train some muscles that will help with your running, and continue to build your endurance levels by keeping your HR elevated.

I've been considering adding cycling to my training as well but not wanting to spend a whole lot of money on a good bike. Recommendations?

@Jennifer, I bought a used bike on Craigslist just for casual riding. Now if I really do get into riding, I may need to upgrade, but I have been able to use the one I got just fine. I know some people really get into biking, for example my brother wants to buy a $700 mountain bike, something I would never do! It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how often you plan to ride..

Thanks Phong, I wouldn't be hardcore into it. Just mainly for extra exercise or even ride to college and back to do cycling along with my runs on same day.
