alright Silverado Trail - Napa 68.01 mi 04:01 17.0mph pace

Lets start with the good. My strongest long ride to date (course is pretty flat though). Now the bad... the heat was causing major issues. I started feeling sick to my stomach and I wasn't sweating anymore. Obviously dehydrated. Then my HR started climbing more and more as we went along. My effort was literally the same the entire ride, but towards the end I started backing off when I saw I was in the 160s! Starting the ride I was right where I usually am in the low 130s, but the heat just kept climbing and eventually the only way to stay cool was to keep riding and create a breeze. Accuweather said is was 83 degrees, but feels like 95. I would say it definitely felt like 95. To top it off snakes were out in full force. I have never seen so many disgusting creatures in my life. I even saw black snakes with blue and green stripes. Wtf? Totally gross and made me cringe every time I rode by one. I also saw tons of dead frogs and birds. Oh and lizards were scattering all around too.

By the time we got back to the car I thought I was going to get sick. I had to sit with the AC blasting to cool down. Got to figure this out fast since there is a very good chance we'll get these conditions at Wildflower in two weeks. -- Supposed to ride between 4-5 hours, but I had to pull the plug early. Not happy about it.

Awwww tough day Nicki! You did a fantastic job despite the heat, which is such a killer. Hopefully hydrating better will help next time. Still a great ride!!!

Hydrate early and often! Freeze half a bottle the night before so that it will stay cold during the race. You still had a good ride!

Snakes are a good omen. Not sure what dead frogs mean. Nice work!

I had one of those days where it felt like I got my butt kicked... But you finished and logged it. Always a chance for us to learn something on days like that. Better NOW than in your race, right?

Aw, sorry to hear about the tough ride. That's good learning for you though and still a great ride. You'll never make the same mistake twice!

Solid ride despite the setbacks Nicki! Not sure about the oddly colored snakes, though. Maybe you were hallucinating? Hehe.

Wow! Way to tough it out in tough conditions! Nutrition is the fourth discipline, as you know, so hydrate constantly. My hope is that you drank at least four to five bottles of water/Gatorade and took salt tabs/Enduralytes and ate a bar or two... And don't ride over the snakes. It's bad luck!

Nice ride. Sounds like you were riding through Dante's Inferno with the snakes and the heat. Either way, amazing pace for such a long and hot ride. Well done.

What are you drinking/eating?? We are so hot/humid down here its taken forever for me to get it right so lots of playing has occurred....and it changes depending on the season...I really like EFS when its hot/humid, but only the grape...and I'm not a grape fan normally...got me through Galveston with zero issues and everyone else was dropping like flies...didn't even need my MetaSalts!! too bad I couldn't run!! great great ride!!

Jenn - I drink mostly water and now I'm realizing thats just not going to cut it. I thought I could take my calories in with gels/bars etc. but its not working. I've tried IM perform since thats what they use at CdA and its not bad. Also tried perpetuem and thats OK. Maybe I'll give EFS a try. This nutrition stuff is so complicated! I'm used to just running and taking a few gels.
