Race day morning started with an eventful commute from Downtown SF to the Golden Gate Park via Muni. I boarded the bus right on schedule so I could make it to the DM meet-up I set at 7am, but my travel was delayed by stops at virtually every station and instead of getting annoyed, I just smiled to myself because the bus eventually got almost filled by fellow runners. Our final stop was further delayed by vehicles trying to find parking space around the park. I felt bad because Wayne & Brian A. were right on time and after exchanging pleasantries, we needed to get to the porta potties & bag check and only Brian & I were able to head back to the starting line together.

It was unusually warm and sunny in SF, as I tried weaving into a sea of runners and struggled establishing my starting pace and eventually headed to the sidewalk where it's less cramped. Having downed a huge bottle of water at breakfast, I felt the need to pee towards mile 1 and thanks to the trees and rich shrubbery at the park, I was able to make a quick diversion to relieve myself. I was at the right pace at mile 2 where I started noticing the mile markers were off by about a fraction of a mile, but I went on relying on my Garmin as far as my pace is concerned.

With the lingering mild heat after mile 3, I started feeling the need to stop at every water station, and even resorted to walking as I felt almost breathless and noticed my heart rate beating faster for some reason. This led me to decide to forego my goal time of under 2 hours and just try beating my PR of 2:10 at the SF (Half) Marathon last year. I heaved a momentary sigh of relief going towards mile 7 upon seeing the turn leading to the Great Highway with a spectacular view of Ocean Beach. The waves magically turned the waters to white and we even encountered a few surfers crossing our route to get to the beach. It was such a nice day, but it also meant the scorching heat of the sun beaming to our direction, sans the trees and even more cups of water consumed at the stations.

There was a little comic relief around miles 9 and 11, where some spectators wearing devil horns tried to tease and coax runners to quit, and even offered slices of bacon, as well as burgers and soda. Of course, the runners just laughed them off and marched on like good soldiers :)

The historic Dutch Windmill marked the final mile and I managed to set an unofficial PR of 2:05, as shown in the finish line timing display, or 5 minutes faster than my personal best. Please note that the distance and pace reflected here by Garmin are a bit off, since I forgot to immediately stop it at the finish line, aside from disparities with respect to the event timing. The course was mostly flat and fast, but given the aforementioned factors, plus a few mild side stitches, I'm very much satisfied with this race, scenic views and all.

Huge shoutouts to Wayne & Brian A. for taking the time for the meet-up and finishing their respective races. I'm so honored finally meeting such kind Dailymile legends. Congrats also to my friend, Frederika V., for completing her third official 5k!

Official race results are out: So, my new PR is actually 2:02:24, which is 7:49 better than my previous 2:10:13 record.

You're welcome, Peach! As I've told you earlier, I was keeping my eyes peeled just in case you were waiting at the finish line with your camera handy :) Thanks! I'm actually starting a blog and hopefully I could get it up and running before my full marathon :)

You rock! Great PR under challenging circumstances. I can attest to the feeling of the sun beating down on the Great Highway with no shade! It's a very long straightaway.

Great recap! Way to stay positive after running late to the race, I would have been super annoyed. Great Highway sucked...I stopped and walked at every water station, drinking a cup of water and then dumping another cup on my head.
