good Run Wild for A Child 5K 3.21 mi 00:25 07:39 pace

Golden Gate Park is a nostalgic place for me considering this is where my high school buddies and I ran our very first 5K and set our respective PRs together last September, and for our 2nd race today, two of us beat our old PRs. It was a chilly morning at 40s in SF but I warmed up real quick since I arrived 10 minutes before gun time, just enough to claim my bib, check my bag, and sprint to the porta potty then the starting line. I made it to the last half of the pack and it was hard to weave through the sea of people, including children, since this event was also a fun run with toy-themed costumes and all. By mile 1 I was able to pick up my pace at under 8 minutes and was consistent until my stomach started cramping (side stitch) which forced me to walk around mile 1.5. Then I managed to pick up and maintain my pace again after following the breathing technique I read somewhere to stop the cramping. After a couple more side stitches I was able to do a negative split towards the last mile to compensate the walking breaks I did. Funny that Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head served as my benchmark and I managed to pass the Missus a few meters to the finish line. I was aiming to beat my virtual 5K turkey trot last thanksgiving but considering the cramping and all, I was happy that I beat my previous 5K race pace by almost a minute. And nothing beats having motivated your friends to get into running, doing races with them, as well as keeping track of each other's training progress. So it's all good!

My Garmin's map went haywire and I forgot to stop it after I crossed the finish line, hence the extra mile-ish. Below are the official results from the organizer's website:

Chip Time: 24:22
Average Pace: 7:52/min
Overall Place: 107th out of 911
Age Group: 15th out of 74

Fantastic job, Mike. Way to overcome the obstacles. You made up amazing ground for a back-pack start in just a short distance! Congrads on the PR, to both you and your friend.

PR's after training are awesome. I trained for my first 10k. I've done 4 total and my best time was my first since I trained. My Turkey Trot killed that pace, but it was 6 miles, not 10k. I'm happy for her, hopefully the record will fall quickly.

@Chris, that's really awesome. What's more awesome is we enjoy doing it as well!
@Beth, thanks! So proud of you for coming out and finishing strong, despite the odds. There's a Christmas 5k at GGP benefiting The Rose Home Women's Shelter on Dec 19 :)
@Peach, thanks! And you know the other person I'm referring to who beat a PR is you! Congrats! Can't wait for the next one! Is Dec 19 too soon? Haha!
