great My 1st Half in SF Marathon ~ July 25, 2010 13.1 mi 02:10 09:56 pace

The alarm went off at exactly 3am and I didn't have to wake myself up at all because I was up all night anyway. Not because I decided not to sleep but I had a hard time getting one. This may be attributed to the excitement of doing my first ever half marathon, so I guess it got my adrenalin pumping to keep me awake. Plus the neighborhood close to the cheap motel we checked-in at was so rowdy that I just tossed & turned on my bed, until it was time to get myself ready for the big event. After breakfast, my brother-in-law & I drove at around past 5am and as soon as we parked, I hurriedly walked to the starting corral since I signed up for an earlier wave at 5:42am.

So without sleep and just the energy coming from the english muffin, oatmeal, banana & greek yogurt to rev up my run, off I went with the rest of the half marathoners. It was really cold and in San Francisco, it's an understatement. But it's not too cold as I expected it to be. So I ran at an easy pace for the first couple of miles then ran like hell all the way to the first hill at mile 3.

The uphill at mile 5 going to the Golden Gate bridge was brutal though. But as soon as I set foot on the awesome landmark, I sprinted like crazy because those running the opposite direction made me feel like catching up to them or something. Not to mention the breath-taking view from the bridge and running under a thick fog. All those cups of cytomax & water I gulped along the way started kicking in so I had to pee at Vista Point. I didn't want to because stopping or slowing down was not an option for me, but I really had to go.

Mile 10 after the bridge was crucial for me because negotiating the uphill took a toll on my calves. At the onset I felt just a tinge but as soon as I hit downhill, my calves started cramping. So I had no choice but to stop for about two occasions to rest & stretch for a few minutes. The pain gradually disappeared but the succeeding hills along miles 11 & 12 made it really difficult for me to sprint my way to the finish.

At 2:10, I finished the race, 10 minutes short of my goal of 2 hours or less. But I had no regrets whatsoever because I thought I did my best and the race was well-organized. I failed to mention though that I got the wrong shirt size, my Garmin Forerunner 305 acted up and didn't record my stats, the map & all, a little nipple chafing (ouch!), over and above my lack of sleep. But all these issues didn't take away my moment. The pride of finishing my 1st Half Marathon in one of the most beautiful cities of the world!

To top it all, I'm proud to note that the official results show that I belong to the upper half of racers' ranking in all categories, as follows:

Overall: 2854 out of 8394
Men: 1644 out of 3405
M 40-49: 346 out of 745
Age/Grade: 47.76% Place: 4013
Finish: 2:10:13 Pace: 9:56

Ain't that awesome?

That is an awesome time for a first half! Great job! I ran the first half too and was a little shocked at the number of hills so early on in the race. They were no joke! Glad to hear you had a good time!

Thanks Suzanne, you did an awesome job as well! We should be very proud of ourselves for conquering those hills!

I went at the last day of the expo and so bummed that they ran out of the shirt size I signed up for. Good thing I discovered this shirt exchange at the Information tent in Embarcadero so I'm happy I'll be getting the right size from the mail soon!
