Roy P. leah having to clean ...

Track and share your training!

Dailymile makes it easy to keep track of your workouts. Map your routes and share with a community of active people.

Leah having to clean her bike after the rain reminded me, my experiment using Mobil 1 5W-20 motor oil was a FAIL. It worked great while on the chain, but ended up all over the spokes, rim, brakes :-O, spattered the derailleur all over, and took nearly and hour to clean up with lots of Simple Green and a SonicScrubber. Took the cassette off the bike and cleaned it in the sink in a shallow tray.

It was great though to ride with a nice clean drive train last night. The shifting is so much better! Just though I should UPDATE everyone.

Just Q-Tipped my chain. OK, it's official, I'm bored! :) It needed it though. That oil keeps crawling out of the chain, or somewhere, and making a mess. Had to clean the cassette again though, but on the bike this time. Sigh...

That, sir, is the epitome of boredom. I have a ride planned for this morning, so think I'll hold a field day on my bike later this afternoon - minus the Q-Tips. Oh, what solution do you use when cleaning the chain by running it through a chain cleaner?

Cotton rags work fine for cleaning the chain on the bike, and Q-Tips for inside the links. Otherwise I take it off via the quick link and wash it in a heavy glass jar with hot water and Simple Green, shaking the chain in the jar. (they do break occasionally, so best to fill all the way full to eliminate all the air, and wear rubber gloves)
