I saw the replay. I think that Contador is BS'ing when he said he had no idea, and I disapprove of that. I don't think what he did was right or wrong, but I think that if the pelaton disapproves of what he did, Contador will be punished one way or another.

...but think about who also went off the front first. AC had to go with them since they did not wait...i would like to see andy win but also understand that sanchez and menchov are still in the race as well....two big climbs and a TT to go. and there is nothing like a little anger in the tummy to get andy to turn those pedals faster...

When contrasting this against similar scenarios that played out in past TdF's it seems a little out of line. In the end though, it's easy to pass judgement from the couch and miss what's really happening. Like you say, there's so much more to go, and there's some amazing riders out there. I don't watch TdF for the winners anyway - I watch it for the domestiques!!
