Damn. Rested for past 3 days to get my shins completely healed. Was feeling really strong all day with pent up energy and really looked forward to tonight's run. Started out and quickly realized that my outside shin area was the worst it's ever been. By 4km there was no way I could continue. Stopped for a while and tried to go again but no way. Kept trying as there was no way that I wanted to believe this was happening. At this point I would say that Sunday's race is questionable. But am gonna keep hoping and trying everything next 2 days. I feel I am so ready for this race, did the training and am feeling physically very strong. And there is no pain now when not running. Damn. Suggestions anyone.......

RICE and stretching/yoga is all I can suggest. 3 days is barely enough healing time really. When it's race day, you'll warm up and those muscles will feel much better, so don't fret, just rest and stretch.

Is it possible to mix it up on race day?...alternate running and walking?

On further thought, if on race day you can't warm up enough to go, then try Roxanne's suggestion perhaps. If that doesn't work either, then give it up, there are other races. A shame though, but it does happen. Stay to cheer!

oh richard.......right now, my heart goes out to you . I know you have listened to all the seasoned running experts out here and how diligent you have been with your training. Please dont get down about it. Roxane may be on to something... consider following the walk/run pacer??

Oh no Richard I am so sorry about this. Sometimes the timing is just not on our side. You have some great advice. Give it rest and ice and ibuprofen of you can take it and try on Sunday.

Oh no...my heart is with you Richard! Ugh. Though it would be disappointing...there are plenty of races coming still and better not to cause some more injury if you're not ready to go Sunday. Hard to swallow, I know. Maybe take a trip to a special location for another race a bit later? (that's what I would do). I also like Roxanne's suggestion....but not as satisfying perhaps.

Ok, I just looked - how about the Hamilton Marathon on November 4th?

Very sorry to hear that news, Richard. Afraid I have no suggestions to make. Can only send my best wishes for healing.

Sorry that the pain hasn't subsided Richard, I sincerely hope that it heals quickly..if not, you've built a great base to run in a different marathon once it has healed completely.

Thanks folks for your kind thoughts. Penelope, funny, but I've already checked out that Hamilton s now a possibility and only a few weeks away. But not giving up on Sunday until Sunday. Thanks for checking.

Nice job Richard. Wise decision to rest up for 3 days and then a recovery run.

Ugh. Not good. Hoping maybe it was an anomaly and all will be fine on Sun. I'd ice, do lots of active isolated stretching in the ankle (which leads to stretching the shin area) and rest til then...your base is strong. Sending healing vibes my friend!

I woke in the night thinking about your shin pain and this is what I think: if it was muscle pain it would have warmed up and gone away. So it must be stress fractures (it got worse as you warmed up.) See a doctor, but I think you'll have to miss this run, or maybe walk it only... sorry, wanted a better answer.

Rest, ice, compression, elevate. If you're going to run Sunday (stubborn like me?) Slow it down A LOT! Take it easy man. Dont push it!

Sorry to hear this Richard.. I still hope you are able to run your marathon on Sunday, will be praying for you. Just be smart and don't hurt yourself more.
I can feel for you.. I had to cancel the marathon that I had trained for this whole year. But you know, health comes first.

Oh man I am so sorry to read this. All I can say is you've got another week +, I would just stay off of it until then and let's hope for the bets. Either way you have put in the hard work and really that is what it is all about, the work to get there.

I hope that you're feeling better, Richard. How disappointing. *hugs*

I agree with Patriciarae that moving your race to one held on a later date may be more sensible and give you the time to rest your shin properly. It is super crappy but better to be disappointed for a few weeks than injured for a few months. Take care xx

Gutted for you. Worst timing ever but don't force it. You will not lose much fitness if you back off for a week and pick a later marathon.

Bummer! I'd try wearing a compression sleeve day and night and keep the leg elevated above body on pillow - at nite at least, preferably during day as well if circumstances permit.
