Today was my run for Peter A. Ran w/o ipod & headphones for the first time in forever. I'm always listening to running podcasts, This American Life, WTF, or some other news / information shows. Never really listen to music.
It was nice. Listened to my breathing, the birds, the trees creaking in the wind. Ran a little over 3 and decided to walk the rest. Beautiful wildflowers out there right now. Saw my first catbird of the season.

I typically run without an ipod for the reasons you stated. That said, when I'm not running I always have one. The best podcast in my book is "The History Of Rome"...it's up to something like 130 episodes, all available for free on iTunes. It starts with the myth of Romulus and Remus, and has continued right up to Constantine (and still going).

My second favorite podcast is "The Classic Tales", which are readings of short stories and novellas that are in the public domain. The guy that does it is very good and takes it seriously. He's done stuff from Chekov to Dickens to Poe to Christie ...

Nice run... I almost always bring the iPod - on my long runs, I listen to sermon podcasts. But with all the rain we've been having, I've been leaving the iPod at home and just listening to my thoughts.
