I survived perhaps my worst year in 2017, just no time to train. Gotta make some goals for 2018...hmm....

Did Not Finish the Chicago Marathon and it was GLORIOUS

Yeah I was a bit conflicted about participating knowing I could not run the whole way, but if the Chicago Marathon organizers won't give me a refund for a medical reason then I'm going to do whatever I can.

Turns out I can run 10 miles. Felt pretty good too. I drove in to downtown to park where I do for work. It is close enough to the start I can just walk right in. There were TONS of runners. I felt awesome just to be a part of the experience.

I wanted to use a portapotty before the race so I found the first few I could. It was a long, long line but I was in no hurry. All of a sudden a man says there are hundreds more just down the way without anyone. So I walked over and he was right. I went, and then came back to spread the word. Most people ignored me, but that is fine. I did my part.

Before the race I chatted with my coral mates. I was proud to be in the C coral after my half PR last August. There were some really nice people there.

Once the race started I tried to keep up with the 3:45 pace group. I was able to hang with them pretty much the whole way.

So things I saw along the way.

1) A whole lot of Jesus signs. A whole lot. Big ones too. When did that happen? They were mostly just in the loop area.

2) my favorite sign was "26.2 because 26.3 is just CRAZY!"

3) when we got to Lincoln park about mile 6 a lot of guys seem to peel off and pee in the park on the fence or trees. Same thing I saw in 2006. Really?! Maybe lay off the morning coffee. Plus I don't even want to ask about the ladies.

4) around mile 9 a huge group of young ladies were jumping up and down in unison singing that "call me maybe" song. It was awesome.

5) the BEST however was seeing "DO EPIC SHIT" on a big red sign with Andrea underneath. I ran over to say hi. I'm not sure if today counted but coming from a stress fracture 4 months ago and working back to 5 miles yesterday and 10 miles today is about as much I can do. Plus I've for the goofy challenge to work towards.

Being a north sided I was really glad to be able to run this first portion of the run today. I got I run past my old condo front door, which was cool.

Maybe someday I'll get another chance to run my city from north to west to south and back. Who knows what the future holds for us.

Now to get home and continue working on my home repairs.

You are such a good sport! Nice job joining in on the action to do what you could do. I think coming off an injury only 4 months ago, you should consider this a win! Have a great day, Ben!

One of these days I'm going to be at a race you are running and have a sign that reads "Happy Chanukah, Ben!" Just because. Or maybe I'll sing the dreidel song. Amazing run - glad you made the most of it and had an awesome time.

Loved the Do Epic Shit sign! And the Call Me Maybe made ma laugh - those poor spectators who had to listen to it over and over and over again! So glad you were able to be part of it, even just for a short while.

Way to make the best out of the situation Ben. And 10 at this point is great. I saw most of the signs you reference, but did not see the "call me maybe" singers.

Oh, it counted indeed, Ben. It SOOOO counted. You totally freaked my freak when you came by. Thus my "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!" as you zipped back into the crowd of runners and continued on. Job well done, my friend. Job well done indeed.
