Gels instead of Snickers bars - what are you thinking?! :) I think I liked your old nutrition strategy better... but I hope this works for you. Personally I cannot stand gels or other similarly too-sweet stuff in long races. Sip of Gatorade at later aid stations is all I can manage. Real food otherwise.

I've ordered some cliff bars too, but for the price of one of those I could buy, like two 5 packs of mars, I just need something in the bag for when I actually feel hungry, which happens randomly and sometimes not at all.

Yeah they are stupid expensive! I have used nutrigrain bars and these days ritz PB crackers seem to be doing well. Cheap and easy and gives you pretty much the same thing!

As I have recently discovered (after drinking milk for the better part of 46 years) it could be allergies to other things (that develop as you get older) too... Doesn't hurt to try wheat elimination and maybe also dairy elimination diets (minimum 10 days of each, separately so you can tell what's what :) - but yes, go to the doc!

definitely see the doc. As for parasites, I was reading not to drink from streams except with purifiers even if you're sure they're pure, because there could be something dead in the water upstream. I developed IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) a few years ago all of a sudden, and can no longer eat broccoli!!! One of my favourite foods, alas.

I thought that my recent probs were from drinking contaminated water, but I have had a few minor issues beforehand, then a few weeks back I did a framing job, practically on my own with a deadline that meant 12-13 hour days for 7 days straight... I guess I was pretty stressed and running took a back seat. I've read that stress can bring on allergies and my symptoms which include horrendous mouth ulcers would point to it being an allergic reaction or intolerance.

The mouth ulcers could signify a flare up of underlying infection due to exhaustion. For sure take plenty of Vitamin C and see a doctor...

The endurance from running made you recover faster! Nice run. I've been there, killing myself getting a big job like that done, I seem to find it actually makes you stronger if you have recovery time. (If you don't take a day or two off though, it can wreck your body...)

Power hiking can definitely be faster than running on a steep grade like that. But don't let me stop you from fairy high stepping ;) Nice run Nick!
