Finished 3'rd overall. Not bad for living in northern IN for the last 8 years. Toughest course I have ever run, but it was the smartest race I ever ran. Took what the mountain gave me and l... read more

Hot, humid, aweful. One of my worst runs in a long time. Figured I did not hydrate enough. Keep a water bottle with me at work, but not on the weekends. Since it was a shorter run, I did not us... read more

hey that's pretty intense. I'm thinking of running at the gymn on a reverse incline treadmill to get ready for some summer mountain running. Downhill training is maybe more important than uphill.

I hear ya on the downhills. The trails I run have steep up and downs so my quads usually handle it pretty well. Two years ago in Colorado I ran 6 miles up and 6 miles down at Rocky Mountain National Park and did not even get sore. I am a mountain man stuck in the flat lands of IN. At least where I live, it rolls some.

RUN
good Winona Lake trails 8 mi
Did a hill fartlek after racing on Saturday and a 3 hour run on Sunday. Felt better than expected.

Good luck, Neal. This is my first time for this race, and also my first time doing a longer trail run, so I don't have much advice to give. My husband did a portion of the race last year and got very dehydrated, but I think it was because he was underprepared and didnt hydrate correctly. Just make sure to stay hyrdrated! It looks like the beginning of the race is one of the more difficult sections, with about an 8.5% grade between miles 6 - 9. I think that's the steepest portion of the race.
