great Peachtree Road Race 6.22 mi 01:11 11:28 pace

What is it they say about Atlanta running: Heat, Hills and Humidity? Today's race had all three although much less sweltering than last year - in part because they moved the race time up a half hour and that made a big difference.

This was my 6th Peachtree Road Race and I still remain inspired by it - there's a great atmosphere in the air and it being 4th of July adds to the festive atmosphere. I really like that I know a lot of folks who run this and although I missed being able to see Bill H. and Darrell G. in real life, I did hang with a lot of my Runsofarians both before and after the race. Also saw Kelli and her husband Drew at the Park Tavern at the end, she won a mug as well as at least three of the Runsofarian women for being in the top 500 finishers. Some killer runners they are!

The race itself was a challenge for me - my time was almost the same as last year. It really breaks into two different 5Ks, the beginning half is fast and the second half has Cardiac Hill and several other hills after that, coinciding with the temperature going up. 97% humidity throughout. It was "Code Yellow" when I started and then "Code Red" for heat at the halfway point.

Where this was a more satisfying race than last year was that I had a more consistent run. Took a little off the front end and then was able to fully run the second half. It really was the difference between feeling "is this all I got" and "I can train and get better". Hat tip to Sue R. , I thought of her IM training everytime I was tempted to walk and that got me through!

Easy to get hooked on this race and I'm not done with it yet. I hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July!

Congrats on a nice run today Mike - you are right, it's like 2 5Ks strung together - we all love the first one and hate the second one.

Perfect description of the race. I’m so sorry I missed you. This was by far my most enjoyable Peachtree. I can’t wait to do the 50th next year.
