Where do I start with this? So the situation/rules: its was a 1.6 mile loop with basically half/half trails and roads, pretty good snow coverage everywhere so trail shoes woulda worked just on the road part but I went with trail shoes (new Montrails, LOVE em!) and Yaktrax. For the race I was doing you had 21 minutes for the first lap and the time would get a minute faster each time, you had to wait the full-time each time so there was some strategy involved, albeit pretty obivous: don't go out too fast and give yourself too much sitting around time. Here's the summary of my laps:
1- 1.65mi @ 17:14 (10:28 avg pace), (21 min)
2- 1.59mi @ 15:20 (9:39 avg pace), (20 min)
3- 1.60mi @ 15:42 (9:48 avg pace), (19 min)
4- 1.60mi @ 15:07 (9:27 avg pace), (18 min)
5- 1.60mi @ 14:19 (8:56 avg pace), (17 min)
6- 1.59mi @ 14:07 (8:54 avg pace), (16 min)
7- 1.58mi @ 14:02 (8:54 avg pace), (15 min)
8- 1.58mi @ 13:48 (8:43 avg pace), (14 min)
I ran the first lap with Jamie and although it was a lil crowded that was fine since I was in no hurry. Felt pretty relaxed the first 4 laps or so, ran the 3rd (i think?) lap with Crystal and just tried to stay even keel, and conserve energy. Definitely didn't realize until looking now that I got faster almost every lap, hmmm that wasnt part of the strategy but then again didn't really put that much thought into it. There were some crazy fast guys (top two guys made it through the 9 minute lap I think) and I was just following the crowd for the most part, and we started to take off around laps 5&6 particularly on the trail part, then ease back a lil on the road. I started to think at this point I would maybe make it to the 12 min lap but that was a lil over-zealous with the way my ankles have been feeling recently, plus absolutely no way recent speed-work to my name. So when I got in from lap 8 with 10 seconds to spare, I called uncle and looked at the total time and decided to wait around for Jamie and run 1 possibly two laps with her. Fun race, and I think with better training going into it I coulda been a lil more competitive (no duh! :p), but still a great day with friends on a pretty trail for a great cause. Congrats to Janell W. for putting all this together, and getting so many great people together in such frigid condtiions!
