Went on a Saturday scenic route ride with the Joyriders. Finished the 68km ride and had a short pit stop at the ECP Lagoon Hawker Center, then went off to ride home alone. I was on the ECP service road, which is mostly straight and clear of vehicular traffic, when I saw a female pedestrian on my side of the road. I saw her and she saw me, and i moved my line to the right to give her more space as she looked like she was going to cross the street. When I was 2 meters away from her, she suddenly decides to cross and I jam my brakes and end up Supermanning off my bike. Fell down on my arm and face, dislocating my shoulder on impact. When I tried to raise my head off the tarmac, there was a huge pool of blood so i stopped right there not knowing where the bleed was coming from. Within seconds some other Joyriders arrived and called an ambulance and told me not to move. They got my towel out of my pack and compressed it over my face. Then paramedics arrived. They immobilized me and took me to hospital. First they checked me for spinal injuries of which I was cleared. Next was xrays for the shoulder which i had managed to pop back in while lying on the street. Lastly a plastic surgeon spent two hours stitching up my huge gashes above the right eye and lip. My wife arrived at the hospital, having been called by the Joyriders. She waited the whole afternoon for me and eventually I was discharged and got home to see my bike which a JR mate had bought to my house. Bike is miraculously undamaged except for one paint chip off of the aero cockpit. Wonder how that could have happened. Also saw my shades which were caked in blood and basically a total loss. They saved the upper half of my face and importantly my eye sockets.
The part which makes me sad is my own kids are scared of my bloody face. I suppose its extremely bad.
Cycling is intrinsically a dangerous sport but you can do everything correctly and still end up hurt because of stupid people. So please watch out, ride defensively and wear your helmet, it may save your life.
