      I wonder what it is - you're a psychologist, what about running is not providing you with reward/reinforcement? Maybe just re-adjust your goals for this race and try to get 1-2 double digit runs in before and it might go better than you think.

    Well, given the the pool wasn't deep, I wanted to work on technique without fear of drowning interfering. Not much but it was something.

      I used the float belt for pool running when I was working on technique - totally keeps you afloat lets you focus on form. Most pools that have water-aerobics have them around.
