This was all bad. Well, except for getting to see Danielle S. and Sara B. and getting to run with Sean M. in his first (unintentional) ultra haha. First-races at night are super hard to fuel for, and knowing that I fuel terribly for races anyways, we all should have known how this would turn out. Second, the humidity was literally 80 some percent. Lastly, lets talk about the bugs. HUGE effing swarms of gnats, I must have gotten my protein intake for the year eating those things..NOT what you want to be doing during 12 hours of running through the night.
So going into this, I wanted two things, I wanted night running experience for my 100 mile run (which is upcoming in like a month!(**(!&@()&) and I wanted to hit over 50 miles, cause lets face it, 50 miles is the most Ive run and theres a big difference between 50 and 100.
The wakefield course is tough for several reasons, its flat and fast (and we all know I like both) but that means I have no self control as to going out too fast (which I did) and no idea when to walk so that my legs dont hate me at mile 34. It is also the longest 3 mile loop everrrrrr when you are on the other side at 2 am.
I started having serious stomach issues at the half mary mark, this would have been an issue even if i was running the marathon, but because I had another 8 hours of running after the marathon I knew it was gonna be a rough night. I changed clothes after the marathon, needing any bit of comfort I could get, but throwing up and hitting the portopotties at least 8 times in under 8 hours doesnt get better. After damn near walking the entire last loop I was beat, and sick and just wanted my bed. In retrospect my 84 mile week of running and back to back 20s probably didnt leave much freshness in my legs, but hey live and learn.
HUGE thanks to everyone for the encouragment and to Sean M. who hasnt run anything even remotely close to the 32 miles he put in with me last night, and to Danielle S. for running some loops with me too. Congrats to Sara B. for her BQ who looked really strong through the whole race.
*Good luck to Andy O. and Peter A. at Burning River 100 today!! You guys rock!!!
