I know calf pain - biblically! A foam roller will do wonders. If you can't find one, a tennis ball will do. There's a great YouTube video from athletes treating athletes on how to do it. I'm at the airport so can't post link, but don't delay. Remember that bent leg soleus stretch, eccentric calf lifts & pumpkin seeds discussion? I'll post some links for you tomorrow, but it's best to be proactive with this particular moo-sle!

I've had heel and sole pain and the deep massage via rollers definitely helps big time - so you should try that for your calf. And stretches.... Hope you get this sorted out soon! Any idea on what brought it on? Stress from hills? I try running outdoors with Shadow once in a while and my calves definitely seize up due to unevenness of the ground.

thanks girls, it was the hills I did 2 weeks ago, it was a cold morning, and I didn't do enough of a warmup, run up the hill and that's when it started. I've been doing some calf stretches, but think my technique is not quite right (having looked at some YouTube videos). Also, how many times should I do them in one day?

    blah RUN 05/15/13 09:04 AM 5.41 km 00:45 13:26 pace

Took this really really easy - my calf was tight after a few minutes, so kept it to a slow jog and it didn't get any worse (or better).

Hmm...do you have a foam roller? I'd highly recommend using it on the whole leg, front and back. And taking Ca supplement. I'm glad the jogging didn't make it feel worse, but I hope you start feeling better soon!

Calcium. It's actually necessary for muscles. I believe plays a role in oxygen delivery to them as well. I read a while back that sometimes cramping occurs when not enough Calcium. I take it when I feel tense and can't sleep. It helps. In case you want to know what brand is good (my mom did all kinds of research to figure this out), I take Puritan's Pride. Calcium Magnesium with vitamin D3. I just take half the tablet in the evening when I feel tense/sleepless or when muscles are really sore/tense.

ah, of course, calcium. I've been taking a multivitamin, but I'll try that, might not be able to get Puritan's Pride but I'll see what the local health store has. thanks Irina!

I'm going to rest my leg for a few days, no walking or running. I have a set of gentle stretches to do daily also. I don't have any compression socks - maybe now is the time to investigate!
